Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

Julian slowly pulled out his executive chair and sat down, his eyes fixed warily on the manila folder resting inches from his hands.

“What is this?” he demanded, though his voice lacked its previous theatrical certainty.

“Open it,” I instructed quietly.

Julian’s fingers opened the clasp and pulled out the top document. It was a certified itemized billing statement from the Napa Valley resort, highlighting four nights in the presidential villa, champagne services, and spa treatments—all charged directly to Vale Meridian’s primary corporate development account under a false classification for client acquisition.

Beneath it lay photographs: high-resolution digital stills of Julian walking hand-in-hand with Chloe Marr through the resort gardens, taken by a private investigator Maya had retained twelve hours after my admission to the hospital.

The color drained from Julian’s face so fast his skin took on a gray, translucent hue.

“This... this is a private matter,” Julian stammered, his voice rising in panic as he looked around the table at the stone-faced vice presidents. “This has nothing to do with corporate governance! It’s a smear campaign orchestrated by a bitter wife during a domestic dispute—!”

“It stopped being a domestic dispute the moment you used twelve thousand dollars of company capital to fund your mistress’s vacation while our son was dying in an operating room,” I interrupted, every word landing with brutal, sledgehammer force.

“Evelyn, please,” Julian muttered, leaning forward, his arrogance entirely evaporated, replaced by frantic desperation. He reached across the table, trying to grab my hand, but I pulled back sharply as if his touch were toxic. “We can talk about this at home. We can work it out. Don't do this to our marriage over a mistake—!”

“We don't have a marriage, Julian,” I said, pulling the final document from my own folder—the executed divorce petition bearing the stamp of the county clerk’s office. “And as of eight minutes ago, under Section 4 of the Vale Family Trust, your voting proxy has been permanently revoked, and your seat as Chief Executive Officer has been vacated for gross moral turpitude and financial fraud.”

Julian leaped to his feet, knocking his chair over backward with a deafening crash against the hardwood floor.

“You can’t do that!” Julian screamed, his composure completely shattering as spittle flew from his lips. “I built this company! I made Vale Meridian a household name! Without me, this firm is nothing!”

May you like

“Vale Meridian was founded by my father twenty-five years before you ever learned how to balance a corporate ledger,” I replied, standing up slowly from my chair, looking down at him with absolute, unyielding contempt. “Security is waiting outside the double doors, Julian. You have ten minutes to clear your desk before your access badges are deactivated.”
