Chapter 4 - The Offshore Trail

The silence in the courtroom was so profound that the low hum of the overhead ventilation system sounded like a jet engine.
Judge Holloway flipped slowly through the pages, her expression darkening with every single line. She looked up from the documents, her gray eyes fixing directly on Gabriel, who was now sweating profusely, his hands gripping the edge of the table so tightly his fingers were entirely bloodless.
"Mr. Linwood," Judge Holloway began, her voice dangerously quiet. "It appears your engineering firm hasn't been operating at a loss for the past three years. In fact, you've siphoned roughly 1.4 million dollars of corporate revenue into a private shell account registered under an LLC in the Cayman Islands."
Gabriel swallowed hard, his throat dry. "That... that's corporate restructuring. Every firm uses overseas tax shelters—"
"Tax shelters are legal, Mr. Linwood. Embezzlement from federal government infrastructure grants combined with systematic tax evasion is a class-one felony," the judge interrupted sharply. She picked up a single sheet of paper from the folder. "And what makes this particularly interesting is that the primary personal guarantor listed on the fraudulent loan applications—the person whose signature appears alongside yours on the corporate liability forms—isn't you. Nor is it your business partner."
Clara’s heart skipped a beat. She stared at the judge, a cold dread washing over her.
"It's Clara Linwood," Judge Holloway finished, her eyes shifting with profound sympathy toward Clara. "Your signature was forged on every single liability document, Mrs. Linwood. Your husband wasn't just divorcing you to start a new life with Ms. Drake. He was positioning you to take the full fall for a federal indictment that carries a mandatory minimum sentence of fifteen years."
A collective gasp echoed through the room.
Samantha buried her face in her hands, letting out a muffled sob of sheer panic. "I told you we shouldn't have used her name! I told you she'd find out!"
"You stupid bitch, I told you to keep your mouth shut!" Gabriel roared, lunging across the table toward Samantha, grabbing her by the collar of her blouse before the bailiffs violently pulled him back, wrestling him down onto the floor of the courtroom.
"Get off me! Let go of me!" Gabriel screamed, thrashing against the two large bailiffs as they pinned his arms behind his back and slapped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with a sharp click.

"Gabriel Linwood," Judge Holloway said, standing tall behind her desk, her voice ringing with finality. "You are remanded into federal custody immediately under suspicion of wire fraud, forgery, and embezzlement. Court is adjourned—and this divorce proceeding is officially converted into a state-level fraud investigation."
