Chapter 6 - The Ghost of Aunt Beatrice

The crisp, official seal of the Department of Justice glinted under the harsh fluorescent lights of the Hennepin County courtroom as Clara stared down at the bank statement in her hands. The numbers printed across the page didn't represent a simple savings account; they mapped out a multi-layered trust fund carrying an initial deposit dating back nearly half a century.
"Aunt Beatrice's estate?" Clara whispered, her fingers trembling against the heavy bond paper. "She passed away five years before Gabriel and I even met. How could a trust be set up for me and an unborn child under her name?"
Special Agent Vance adjusted his leather folio, his expression grim and calculating. "It wasn't set up yesterday, Mrs. Linwood. According to the federal archives, your late great-aunt—who was also the original matriarch of the Linwood family holdings before Gabriel's branch systematically stripped her assets—amended her will back in nineteen-seventy-five with a very specific contingency clause."
Violet leaned closer, clutching her stuffed rabbit, staring up at the federal agent with wide, curious eyes. "What's a contingency, Mommy Clara?"
"It means Aunt Beatrice knew," a cold, smooth voice echoed from the gallery aisle.
Clara and Agent Vance turned to see Camilla Linwood walking slowly toward them, her heels clicking sharply against the marble floor. Camilla’s sharp features were set in a mask of absolute disdain as she glanced sideways at Samantha Drake, who was still trembling under the watchful eye of a federal marshal.
"She knew that the men in this family were built on stolen ledgers and hollow promises," Camilla continued, stopping a few feet away. She met Clara’s shocked gaze with a look of profound, fierce solidarity. "Beatrice left her private estate locked inside a generational trust, legally protected from Gabriel’s corporate raiding. The only way it could ever be triggered was if a Linwood spouse was pushed to the absolute brink of total destitution by fraud—and forced to sign away their rights in a court of law."
Clara’s breath hitched. "She baited him. The divorce petition... the pressure to sign everything over..."
"It was the tripwire," Camilla nodded sharply. "Gabriel’s greed made him walk right into the trap. By demanding you sign away your assets tonight, he officially activated the trust's fraud clause, transferring sole executorship and absolute ownership of the entire Linwood family portfolio directly to you."
Before Clara could process the staggering magnitude of what she had just inherited, a sharp, frantic voice cut across the courtroom.
"That's a fraudulent document! It violates probate law!"
It was Samantha Drake, jumping up from the bench, her face twisted in a mask of hysterical desperation as she pointed a manicured finger at Clara. "Gabriel told me that money was ours! He promised that once the divorce was final, we’d use the offshore accounts to buy a villa in Cabo! You can't just give it to her—she's a nobody!"

Agent Vance didn't even look at Samantha. He simply nodded to the marshal standing beside her. "Ms. Drake, you've just confessed on the record to conspiring to launder stolen corporate funds across international borders. Cuff her."
