Chapter 7 - The Downfall of Samantha Drake

The heavy click of steel handcuffs wrapping around Samantha’s wrists echoed sharply through the quiet courtroom, shattering the remaining remnants of her arrogant composure.

"No! You can't do this to me!" Samantha shrieked, thrashing against the marshal as he pulled her arms behind her back. She lunged forward toward Clara, her eyes blazing with blind fury. "This is my life! Gabriel loved me! You tricked him, you pathetic little leech—you planned this whole thing from the very beginning!"

"Keep moving, ma'am," the marshal said coldly, steering her firmly toward the side exit where Gabriel had been hauled away just minutes earlier.

Samantha’s frantic screams faded down the corridor, eventually swallowed by the heavy slam of the holding facility's iron doors. The courtroom descended back into a profound, suffocating silence.

Clara stood frozen, the bank statement still clutched in her hand. The reality of what had transpired over the last thirty minutes was crashing down around her in waves. Her body ached with the heavy fatigue of her eighth month of pregnancy, but the fog of gaslighting and emotional subjugation that had clouded her marriage for seven years had completely evaporated.

"Mrs. Linwood," Agent Vance said, his tone softening with professional respect. "You're going to need medical clearance immediately. The stress of these proceedings—combined with your physical condition—requires a doctor's evaluation before we move forward with the formal asset transfer depositions tomorrow morning."

Clara nodded slowly, her hand resting protectively over her belly where the baby gave a sudden, sharp kick, as if reminding her of his presence. "Thank you, Agent Vance."

Camilla stepped forward, placing a warm, steadying hand on Clara's shoulder. "You're coming home with me tonight, Clara. Not back to that house, and certainly not to a hotel. The main estate on Lake Minnetonka has been secured by federal marshals, and the nursery has been waiting for you for twenty years."

Clara looked at Camilla, surprised by the fierce warmth in the older woman's eyes. "The Lake Minnetonka estate? But I thought Gabriel sold that portion of the family property years ago to fund his startup."

"Gabriel thought he sold it," Camilla smiled, a cold, triumphant glint in her eye. "He forgot that you can't sell what legally belongs to a trust he never had the clearance to touch. Come on. Let's get you and Violet out of here."

As they turned toward the main exit, a court clerk rushed down the center aisle, waving a pink-slip notification.

"Wait! Mrs. Linwood! Urgent notification from the county jail holding intake!" the clerk panted, stopping a few feet away. "Gabriel Linwood just invoked his right to a phone call—and he's demanding an immediate emergency hearing, claiming he wants to trade the encryption keys to his secondary offshore accounts in exchange for a private audience with you."
