Chapter 10 - The Hidden Safe

Daniel and I walked over to where Ivy was standing. The small, flush-mounted wooden panel had been forced open just an inch—likely by Veronica or Henry in their blind panic before the federal raid, or perhaps left unlatched in the chaos of their sudden departure.

Daniel pulled the panel open all the way, revealing a heavy steel wall safe built directly into the foundation of the house. The electronic keypad was dark, but the heavy manual backup dial was still intact.

"What's in there, Daddy?" Ivy asked, tilting her head.

"I don't know, sweetheart," Daniel muttered, examining the dial. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small brass key ring—the one his grandfather had given him years ago before passing away, a key Henry had always insisted was useless.

Daniel inserted the smallest brass key into the manual override slot beneath the dial and turned it clockwise.

Click.

The heavy steel door swung open with a deep, echoing groan.

Inside the safe wasn't gold bars, jewelry, or cash. It was a single, thick leather-bound ledger dating back to nineteen-seventy-five, accompanied by a stack of legal documents tied with a faded red ribbon.

Daniel reached inside, pulled the ledger out, and opened to the first yellowed page. His eyes scanned the handwritten entries, and his face instantly went completely pale.

"What is it, Daniel?" I asked, stepping closer. "What did they hide?"

Daniel looked up from the ledger, his hands visibly shaking, his eyes wide with a mixture of shock and profound vindication.

"It's not just corporate embezzlement," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling. "This is the original shareholder registry from when grandfather built the firm. Veronica and Henry didn't just steal the company from the board... they stole it from my real mother."
