Chapter 7 - The Knock at the Door

The sudden darkness of the phone screen was immediately replaced by a heavy, aggressive pounding on our apartment front door.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
Ivy let out a small gasp, wrapping her tiny hands around the hem of my skirt. "Mommy, is it them?"
"Stay here with Daddy, sweetie," I whispered, kneeling down to look into her frightened eyes before standing up.
Daniel intercepted me before I could take two steps toward the hallway. His expression was a mask of cold, unyielding resolve. "I'll get it. Go stay with Ivy in the back bedroom."
"No, Daniel, we face this together," I said, my hand catching his arm.
He didn't argue further. We walked down the narrow hallway side-by-side, the pounding at the door growing even louder and more frantic. When Daniel pulled the door open, we didn't see federal marshals or social workers.
Standing in the hallway was Henry Linwood, looking entirely unraveled. His expensive silk tie was torn loose, his hair was windswept, and his breath came in ragged, furious gasps. Behind him stood two uniform-clad local police officers looking deeply uncomfortable.
"Daniel! You arrogant, ungrateful little bastard!" Henry roared, trying to push his way past the threshold.
The two police officers immediately stepped forward, placing a restraining hand on Henry’s shoulders. "Sir, keep your distance from the doorway," the senior officer warned.
Daniel didn't budge an inch, blocking the entrance completely. "You're trespassing, Henry. And considering you're currently under active federal investigation for municipal embezzlement, showing up at my private residence with local cops isn't going to look great on your pre-trial bail hearing."
Henry’s face flushed an ugly, mottled purple. He pointed a shaking finger at Daniel’s chest. "You think you've won because of some petty corporate loophole? Your mother and I built that firm brick by brick! We spent thirty years making the Linwood name a powerhouse in this state, and you think you can just hand it over to federal auditors over a petty family dispute?"
"You didn't build it, Dad. Grandfather built it," Daniel retorted coldly. "You just spent thirty years looting it to fund Mom's socialite lifestyle and your offshore shell accounts. And as for the name... I shed it the second I walked out of that ballroom last night."
Henry’s chest heaved violently. He looked past Daniel, his eyes locking onto me and catching sight of Ivy peering out from the hallway behind us. A twisted, desperate smile broke across Henry's face.
"You think you're safe in this dump?" Henry sneered, raising his voice so it echoed down the apartment complex breezeway. "CPS is already three blocks away! They're going to take that little brat straight out of your hands before noon!"
Before Henry could finish his sentence, a heavy, authoritative voice rang out from behind the police officers in the hallway.

"Mr. Linwood, I suggest you shut your mouth right now."
