Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Screen

The digital screen on the kitchen counter hummed with the high-definition feed from downtown, and Veronica’s cold, triumphant smirk seemed to stretch across the small glass surface.
Daniel didn’t flinch. He didn’t drop his coffee mug, and he didn’t raise his voice. Instead, he stepped closer to the phone, reached out, and pressed his thumb against the screen to maximize the video feed, bringing Veronica’s immaculate black suit and the two burly security guards behind her into sharper focus.
"You look stressed, Mom," Daniel said, his voice entirely devoid of panic, carrying an icy calm that visibly made Veronica’s smile twitch. "Black is a slimming color, but it doesn't hide desperation quite as well as you think."
Veronica’s jaw tightened. "You think this is a game, Daniel? The signatures on the offshore restructuring forms are filed under your social security number. By noon, the federal prosecutor’s office won't care about your little wedding tantrum or your sob story. You’re finished."
Before Daniel could reply, I stepped into the frame, keeping Ivy safely behind me out of camera view. "CPS?" I asked, my voice ringing with a sharp, controlled fury. "You think you can weaponize child protective services because you couldn't break us with your money?"
Veronica’s eyes flicked to me with undisguised venom. "A six-year-old child living in a cramped, unstable apartment with a mother who has no independent income and a disgraced father facing felony indictments? It won't take thirty minutes for a judge to grant an emergency custody hold. Henry and I will raise her right—something you clearly weren't capable of doing."
Daniel slowly set his coffee mug down on the counter. The kitchen grew dead silent, save for the hum of the refrigerator.
"You always did think you were the puppet master of the universe, didn't you?" Daniel said softly. He reached into his leather folder, pulled out a folded document, and held it directly up to the camera lens. "Too bad you forgot to check the corporate registry updates from yesterday afternoon."
Veronica squinted at the paper on the screen, her confident posture suddenly stiffening. "What is that?"
"That," Daniel smiled, a dangerous, razor-sharp expression, "is the emergency proxy execution of grandfather’s legacy shares. At eight-fourteen this morning, I formally filed a controlling majority takeover of the Linwood Engineering board. Right now, three federal auditors are walking through your corporate office doors with a search warrant for your personal bank accounts. Your vote doesn't exist anymore, Veronica."

The screen went violently black before she could scream an answer.
