Chapter 10 - The Empty House

The morning sun cast long, cold amber beams across the hardwood floors of the house in Columbus.

Emily stood in the center of the nursery, holding a small, knitted pink blanket against her chest. The room was perfectly silent. The crib was empty, the mobile hung motionless overhead, and the broken pieces of her old life were scattered across the floor where she would never have to walk on eggshells again.

Downstairs, the front door clicked open. Heavy, hesitant footsteps echoed up the staircase.

A moment later, Daniel appeared in the doorway of the nursery. He looked ten years older, his eyes red-rimmed, his shoulders rounded in total defeat. He didn't dare step inside the room; he just leaned against the doorframe like a ghost haunting a place he no longer belonged.

"Emily..." Daniel whispered, his voice cracking. "The police... they arrested Mom formally. They denied bail. And... and my bank accounts have been frozen under the elder-fraud investigation."

Emily didn't turn around. She kept her eyes fixed on the empty crib, feeling an immense, heavy sorrow, but also a strange, liberating lightness in the air.

"Good," Emily said softly.

"Emily, please," Daniel choked out, taking a tentative step forward, his hands trembling as he reached out toward her. "We can get through this together. It's just you and me now. We can leave Ohio, start over somewhere new—"

Emily finally turned around, looking at the man she had married. She saw no remorse in his eyes—only the desperate, pathetic panic of a man who realized he had lost his master and was searching for a new one to cling to.

"There is no 'us' anymore, Daniel," Emily said, her voice completely devoid of anger, flat and absolute. "Your mother murdered our daughter, and you spent every second trying to cover for her. I signed the initial divorce papers with Detective Morrison this morning."

Daniel stumbled backward, his face turning sheet-white. "Divorce? Emily, you can't leave me now! Not after everything we've lost!"

"I'm not leaving you," Emily replied, walking past him toward the hallway with her head held high. "I'm leaving this house. And I'm making sure every single asset your mother stole is returned to its rightful place."

She walked down the stairs, out the front door, and into the crisp morning air, leaving Daniel sobbing alone in the empty hallway as the door clicked shut behind her for the very last time.
