Chapter 6 - The Cloud Backup

The glowing notification light on the cracked screen of Emily's phone pulsed rhythmically against the linoleum floor, casting an eerie blue reflection across her tear-streaked face.
New motion-activated video file uploaded successfully. Duration: 1 minute, 42 seconds.
Emily’s fingers trembled so violently she could barely swipe the screen. The grief suffocating her chest was suddenly eclipsed by a sharp, searing surge of adrenaline. Patricia had claimed the camera was unplugged. Patricia had sworn up and down that no record existed of the moments leading up to Lily’s fall. But cloud storage didn't care about lies; it synced the moment the motion sensor tripped, uploading the footage directly to remote servers before the power or the device could be physically compromised.
"Emily," Daniel choked out, crawling across the floor toward her with hollow, dead eyes, his voice breaking into a pathetic sob. "Emily, please... Mom didn't mean to—she just lost her temper, she didn't think—"
"Don't you dare speak her name," Emily whispered, her voice slicing through the sterile air with a lethality that froze Daniel mid-sentence.
She tapped the notification. The screen flickered, loading the high-definition video file from the nursery.
In the dim amber glow of the nightlight, the video opened with Emily standing near the rocking chair, her posture exhausted as she bounced little Lily against her shoulder. The soft, rhythmic creak of the wood filled the audio channel, accompanied by Lily’s distressed, sharp cries.
Then, the bedroom door swung open.
Patricia stepped into the frame, her face twisted in an ugly, venomous snarl. The audio picked up every sharp word with brutal clarity: “Shut her up, or get out of the house!”
Followed instantly by the unmistakable, violent slap across Emily’s face, the sickening sound of the drop, and Lily’s tiny body hitting the hardwood floor with a chilling, sudden silence.

Emily stared at the screen, tears spilling over her lashes as she watched her baby slip away all over again. But as the camera angle shifted with the movement, something else caught her eye in the background—something hidden behind the nursery bookshelf that neither she nor the police had noticed during the initial panic.
