Chapter 9 - The Confession on Tape

Patricia’s posture stiffened. She looked up at Emily, her eyes narrowing into slits of pure hatred. "You pathetic little parasite. You think a few scribbled notes in an old diary mean anything? Daniel is my son. This entire family empire was built on my name, my grit, and my rules. You were nothing before we took you in, and you're nothing now that your brat is gone."

"Play it," Emily instructed quietly, looking down at Morrison.

Morrison nodded and tapped a button on his tablet resting on the table.

The built-in speaker instantly filled the sterile interrogation room with the crystal-clear audio file pulled from the nursery cloud backup.

“Shut her up, or get out of the house!”

Followed by the sharp, echoing crack of the slap, the gasp, and the deadening silence of the fall.

Patricia’s color drained away completely. The audio recording didn't capture a vague domestic scuffle; it captured her exact words, her exact tone, and the undeniable act of physical aggression that directly precipitated the tragedy.

"That... that's a manipulated file," Patricia stammered, her voice cracking for the first time as she lunged toward the table, her fingernails scraping the metal surface. "That's digital trickery! You can't use that in a court of law!"

"It's authenticated with cryptographic metadata straight from the encrypted cloud server within three seconds of creation," Morrison replied smoothly, clicking the tablet off. "And it matches the forensic bruising patterns on Mrs. Miller's left cheekbone down to the millimeter. Your lawyer isn't going to save you from this, Patricia. The grand jury is convening in three hours."

Patricia slumped back into her chair, her chest heaving as the crushing reality of her absolute defeat finally closed in around her. Her empire of lies, built on decades of manipulation and fear, was collapsing into dust.

"You think locking me up fixes anything?" Patricia hissed, her voice trembling with venomous spite as she glared at Emily. "Daniel will never survive without me. He's weak. He's a coward. He’ll crawl back to me before the week is out."

"Let him," Emily said coldly, turning toward the door. "Because I'm done saving him."
