Chapter 16 - A New Blueprint

The sun began to dip toward the horizon, casting long, amber shadows across the living room floor. Caroline had stayed for dinner—a simple, impromptu meal of homemade pasta and a crisp white wine we had opened to celebrate the official liquidation of Sutton & Associates.

As we cleared the plates from the dining table, my phone finally stopped buzzing. The initial media frenzy over the federal raid had settled into the steady, methodical hum of legal proceedings. Marcus Vance had sent a final text message an hour earlier: Assets frozen, receivers appointed, Richard and Vivian facing arraignment on Monday morning. Enjoy your evening, ladies.

“It’s really over,” Tessa murmured, leaning against the kitchen island as she dried a wine glass with a linen towel. “No more wedding planners, no more engagement dinners, no more fake restaurant bills.”

“No more fake signatures,” I added, pouring a final splash of sparkling water into my glass.

Caroline smiled, leaning against the counter beside her. “So, what happens now? You’ve got your house back, your title is clear, and you’ve just dismantled one of the most corrupt family law firms in the state. What’s next for the unstoppable duo?”

“First, we sleep for about twelve hours straight,” Tessa laughed. “And then... I think I’m going to take a long, quiet vacation somewhere far away from downtown high-rises and men named Sutton.”

“That sounds like an excellent plan,” I agreed, looking around my kitchen—the same kitchen where, less than twenty-four hours ago, a notification on a glowing phone screen had threatened to upend our entire world. We had stared into the abyss of a financial trap designed by experts, and instead of backing down, we had torn it apart from the inside out.

“And what about you, Marilyn?” Caroline asked, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. “Are you going to retire, or are you looking for another corporate empire to dismantle?”

“I think,” I smiled, taking a sip of my water, “I’m just going to enjoy the quiet. At least until the next person tries to forge my signature.”

The three of us laughed—a sound of pure, unadulterated freedom that echoed through the quiet house like a declaration of victory.
