Chapter 18 - Turning the Page

The following weekend, Tessa and I decided to take a drive out to the coast. The ocean air was salty and wild, crashing against the rugged cliffs with a rhythmic, thunderous energy that washed away the last lingering remnants of the city’s concrete tension.

We walked along the shoreline, our boots sinking slightly into the wet, dark sand as the waves licked at the edges of our soles. Gulls cried overhead, dipping low over the cresting white foam before climbing back into the pale, cloudless sky.

“Do you think Caleb will be okay?” Tessa asked suddenly, her voice carrying over the sound of the surf as she stared out toward the horizon.

It was a fair question. Despite everything—the fraud, the lies, the cowardly complicity in his family’s schemes—Caleb was still a human being who had been ground down into dust by the very people who claimed to love him.

“He’s got a long road ahead of him,” I answered, keeping my eyes on the rolling waves. “He’ll have to face the courts, rebuild his life from scratch, and learn how to stand on his own two feet without his mother pulling the strings. Whether he makes it or not is up to him. But for the first time in his life, he has the chance to try.”

Tessa nodded slowly, pulling her wool scarf a little tighter around her neck against the ocean wind. “I don't hate him, Mom. I just... I feel sorry for him. He traded everything for a life that wasn't even his.”

“Some people spend their whole lives living inside a script written by someone else,” I said, looping my arm through hers as we walked side by side down the beach. “We almost got trapped in one, too.”

“Almost,” Tessa smiled, turning her face toward mine with a bright, fierce expression that mirrored the sunlight dancing across the water. “But we burned the script.”

We walked on in comfortable silence, the vast expanse of the ocean stretching out endlessly before us, bright, open, and entirely unwritten.
