Chapter 49 - Closing the Archive

After Marcus left, the house settled back into that warm, enveloping stillness that felt less like a fortress and more like a true home.
Tessa and I walked upstairs to the guest room—the same room we had joked about painting months ago during the height of the storm. The walls were still a neutral, unpainted cream, waiting for a fresh coat of color, waiting for a new chapter to begin.
Tessa placed the brass key from Marcus’s archive on the windowsill, letting the afternoon sun catch its polished metal surface.
“We never did decide what color to paint this room,” Tessa noted quietly, a nostalgic smile playing on her lips.
“We have all spring to decide,” I said, stepping into the room beside her and opening the window just an inch to let the fresh winter breeze drift inside. “Yellow, blue, green—whatever we want. And this time, nobody gets a vote except us.”
Tessa laughed, wrapping her arms around my waist and resting her head against my shoulder.
We stood there together for a long time, watching the sun slowly sink below the horizon, painting the Seattle skyline in brilliant shades of violet and gold. The battles were fought, the enemies were vanquished, and the dark secrets buried beneath the concrete of Mercer Island had finally been dragged into the healing light of day.

There were no more traps waiting at the front door. There were no more forged signatures or hidden cameras or desperate phone calls in the dark.
There was only the quiet hum of a home reclaimed, a future wide open, and a road stretching out before us that belonged entirely, beautifully to us.
