Chapter 30 - The Horizon

The autumn wind swept across the expansive lawns of the state capitol plaza in Raleigh, carrying with it the crisp, invigorating scent of falling leaves and the promise of a clear, bright afternoon.
I walked down the grand granite steps of the courthouse alongside Lauren and Gavin, our footsteps echoing softly against the historic stone. The plaza was bustling with ordinary citizens—students walking to class, lawyers carrying briefcases, families enjoying the cool October sunshine—living their lives under the shelter of an impartial, transparent legal system that we had fought so hard to reclaim.
My phone buzzed in my pocket—a routine notification from the Department of Defense logistics board confirming the permanent charter of the State and Federal Integrity Task Force, with my commission as lead director officially signed and ratified by the congressional oversight committee.
I didn't take the phone out of my pocket. I simply let it buzz, walking shoulder-to-shoulder with the people who had stood with me in the dark farmhouse on that freezing midnight in the Blue Ridge, ready to face whatever lay ahead down the road.
"Where to next, Captain?" Gavin asked, shading his eyes against the brilliant afternoon sun as we reached the tree-lined avenue where our car was waiting.
May you like
I looked at Lauren, then out across the vibrant, bustling streets of the capital city stretching endlessly toward the horizon under a cloudless blue sky.
"Nowhere special, Gavin," I smiled, stepping off the curb toward the car. "Just moving forward."
