Chapter 9 - The Judicial Trap

The historic courtroom of the State Appellate Building in downtown Raleigh was usually a place of quiet, dignified legal debate.

Today, it felt like an armed camp.

At 10:00 AM sharp, Judge Evelyn Vance took her seat on the elevated mahogany bench, her black judicial robes immaculate, her silver hair styled with severe, untouchable precision. She looked out over the empty gallery with the cold, aristocratic confidence of someone who believed her last name and her pending federal nomination placed her entirely above the law.

She had no idea that the oral arguments scheduled for this morning were a complete legal fiction designed to lure her onto the record.

I sat alone at the petitioner’s table in full military dress uniform, my posture rigidly straight, my briefcase resting beside my chair. In the gallery behind me sat two U.S. Marshals in plainclothes, alongside Gavin and Prosecutor Miller.

Judge Vance adjusted her reading glasses, looking down at the case file before her. Her voice, when she spoke, was smooth, authoritative, and chillingly composed.

“This special session of the appellate court is now in order,” Judge Vance announced, her gavel tapping once against the wood. “We are here to review Docket No. 24-AP-889, State v. Estate of Arthur Ross. Petitioner, you may state your appearance.”

I stood up, buttoning my jacket, and stepped forward to the podium.

“Captain Jacqueline White, appearing on behalf of the Department of Defense Inspector General’s office and as primary trustee of the Ross estate, Your Honor.”

Judge Vance’s eyes flicked upward, narrowing slightly as she recognized my name. A brief, fleeting flash of unease crossed her features before she smoothed her expression back into judicial indifference. “Captain White. Your motion for an emergency expedited review of a closed 2014 probate matter is highly irregular. This court has already upheld the original asset distribution.”

“With all due respect, Your Honor,” I replied, my voice ringing clear and steady through the quiet courtroom, “this court didn't just uphold an asset distribution. In November 2021, you personally signed an emergency appellate stay protecting my father’s commercial defaults—defaults that were funded by embezzled probate assets laundered through your brother’s firm.”

The courtroom temperature dropped ten degrees.

Judge Vance’s face flushed a dark, furious red. She slammed her hand down on the bench, her voice rising in sharp, uncontrolled fury. “How dare you! You stand in a court of law and hurl baseless, slanderous accusations against a sitting judge? Bailiff, remove this officer from the courtroom immediately!”

“She’s not leaving, Your Honor,” a calm, authoritative voice echoed from the side doors.

U.S. Marshal Vance (no relation) stepped into the center aisle, flanked by four armed federal agents, holding an open federal indictment warrant.

“Evelyn Vance, you are being placed under arrest for federal wire fraud, judicial corruption, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to commit racketeering,” the marshal declared, his voice booming across the chamber.

Judge Vance stood up behind the bench, her judicial robes swirling around her as she trembled with rage and panic. “This is an outrage! I am a federal judicial nominee! You cannot touch me without the Attorney General’s direct authorization!”

“The Attorney General signed the warrant thirty minutes ago, Judge,” I said, picking up my briefcase and turning away from the podium.

As the federal agents climbed the steps of the dais to place the heavy steel cuffs around the wrists of the most powerful corrupt judge in the state, Judge Vance turned her burning, venomous gaze down at me.

“You think you’ve won something, you ungrateful little soldier,” she shrieked as they led her away from the bench. “Your father didn't build that empire alone! He left something behind that you will never, ever find!”
