Chapter 7 - The Co-Conspirator’s Mask

“Captain White!” the lead marshal shouted, jogging up the steps with his badge held high, bypassing Lauren as if she were a ghost. “Stand back from the perimeter—we have an active containment order!”
I stood up slowly, setting my coffee mug down on Gran’s old rocking chair while keeping my phone clutched firmly in my hand. “Marshal, I’m holding the supplemental IG disclosure right now. What’s happening?”
“Foss just tried to post bail at the county magistrate's office,” the marshal panted, his breath pluming in the cool autumn air. “Except he didn't use his own firm's accounts. He tried to clear a two-million-dollar cashier’s check drawn directly from a frozen offshore trust tied to the 2014 Winston-Salem probate registry.”
Lauren gasped, clutching the porch railing for support. “Gerald? But... but he’s just Dad’s lawyer!”
“He wasn't just his lawyer, Miss White,” the marshal said sharply, pulling out a digital tablet and displaying a live feed of the county booking station. “He was the architect. Your father was just the front man signing the checks. Foss was the one managing the judicial bribes and the shell corporations that looted estates across three states.”
I stared at the tablet screen. On it, Gerald Foss—the polished, smiling attorney who had mocked me in court only hours earlier—was being shoved against a brick booking wall by two state troopers, his expensive silk tie ripped open, screaming hysterically that he was being framed by the federal government.
The pieces of the puzzle clicked together with terrifying clarity.
For years, I had wondered how my father—a man with mediocre business acumen and a string of failed commercial ventures—had managed to secure the judges, the zoning permits, and the legal protections necessary to steal property and bury audits. He hadn't been the mastermind. He had been a puppet controlled by a corrupt legal network operating right inside the state appellate system.
And they had made one fatal mistake: they had picked a fight with a military investigator who knew how to audit a paper trail.
“Where is Gerald being transferred?” I asked, my voice cutting through the chaos on the lawn.
“Federal holding facility in Raleigh,” the marshal replied, eyeing me with renewed professional respect. “And Captain, the U.S. Attorney wants you at the briefing room by 0800 tomorrow. Your name is listed as the primary special liaison on the asset recovery warrant.”
Before I could answer, my phone buzzed again. It wasn't the DOJ secure line this time. It was an encrypted text message from an unknown local relay.
Unknown: You think Foss acted alone? Check who signed the appellate stay on your father’s 2021 commercial loan default.

I stared at the screen as the marshal turned to secure the perimeter. The rabbit hole wasn't just deep—it went all the way to the top.
