Chapter 2 - The Dark Room

A collective intake of breath swept through the rows of spectators behind the railing. Penelope felt her knees buckle slightly, and her lawyer reached out to steady her elbow.

“Daisy, honey,” Penelope managed to say, her voice shaking violently as hot tears spilled down her cheeks. “You’re safe. Nobody is going to hurt you. Tell the judge what you saw.”

Judge Barrett stepped down from the elevated dais, walking around the wooden barrier to kneel down so she was at eye level with the six-year-old. The judge’s severe, judicial demeanor softened into something infinitely more gentle.

“It’s okay, sweetheart,” Judge Barrett said softly, taking one of Daisy’s small, cold hands. “You’re the bravest girl in this whole building. Can you tell me what you saw in that room under the stairs?”

Daisy sniffled, wiping her nose with the sleeve of her yellow cardigan. “Papa... Papa and Bianca brought big boxes into the house late at night when I was supposed to be sleeping. They wouldn't let me out of my room. But one night the door didn't lock right.”

Gabriel lunged forward, ignoring the judge’s previous warning. “She’s lying! She has an overactive imagination—she watches too many cartoons!”

“Mr. Albright, if you take one more step toward this bench, I will hold you in direct contempt of court and have the bailiff cuff you to that chair,” Judge Barrett warned without even turning around, her gaze remaining fixed on Daisy. “Go on, Daisy. What was in the boxes?”

“Papers,” the little girl whispered, her voice trembling. “Lots and lots of papers with Mommy’s name typed at the bottom. And... and Bianca was making Papa sign his name, but then she helped him sign Mommy’s name too. She said, ‘Once she signs away the house and the business in court today, she won't even know what hit her, and we’ll throw her out on the street with nothing.’ And then they put the papers back in the secret floor safe behind the laundry bins.”

The courtroom erupted into a low roar of murmurs.

Penelope stared at Gabriel. The forged signatures. The hasty divorce petition where she had willingly surrendered everything just to escape the psychological suffocation of his betrayal. It wasn't an act of noble resignation on her part; it was a trap meticulously engineered by Gabriel and Bianca, designed to strip her of every legal asset she and her family had contributed to his business.
