Chapter 5 - The Safe is Open

Forty-five minutes later, the heavy side door of the courtroom swung open.

The bailiff strode back inside, carrying a heavy, fireproof metal lockbox that had clearly been ripped out of a concrete foundation. Behind him, two deputies carried three large cardboard boxes filled with folders, financial statements, and computer hard drives.

The bailiff walked straight up to the judge’s bench and set the lockbox down with a heavy thud.

“Found it exactly where the little girl said, Your Honor,” the bailiff reported, panting slightly. “Behind the laundry bins in the basement. The lock was picked using tools found in Mr. Albright’s workbench.”

Judge Barrett popped the lid of the lockbox using a small emergency key provided by the bailiff’s kit. Inside sat stacks of notarized quitclaim deeds, corporate stock transfer certificates assigning 100% of Gabriel’s firm to a shell company registered under Bianca Shepherd’s name, and—most damning of all—forged signature exemplars where someone had painstakingly practiced copying Penelope’s handwriting over and over again on legal waivers.

The judge pulled out the top document, read it silently, and then raised her eyes to Gabriel and Bianca.

“Mr. Albright,” Judge Barrett said, her voice dangerously quiet. “Do you recognize this document?”

Gabriel stared at the lockbox, his hands trembling violently. He didn't answer. He couldn't.

“This isn't a divorce proceeding anymore,” Judge Barrett declared, standing up and slamming the file shut. “This court is entering an emergency injunction freezing all personal and corporate assets belonging to Gabriel Albright and Bianca Shepherd. Furthermore, I am binding these files over to the Marion County District Attorney’s Office for immediate criminal prosecution on charges of felony forgery, perjury, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny.”

The courtroom erupted into total chaos. Bianca burst into loud, hysterical tears, slumping back into her chair while shouting accusations at Gabriel. Gabriel sat frozen, staring blankly at the defense table as his entire life of deceit evaporated in a matter of seconds.

Penelope stood tall beside her lawyer, her hand resting over her baby bump, watching the downfall of the man who had tried to destroy her.

Before the deputies could move to handcuff Gabriel, the double doors at the back of the courtroom swung open again, and a tall, silver-haired man in an immaculate gray suit strode down the center aisle, flanked by two armed federal marshals.

It was Richard Vance—Penelope’s father. And behind him walked three senior auditors from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s financial crimes division.

“Sorry we’re late, Your Honor,” Richard Vance said, his voice echoing with absolute authority as he stopped beside his daughter. “We had to secure the corporate servers first. It turns out Gabriel’s little embezzlement scheme wasn't just a domestic fraud—it was skimming from federal defense subcontracts.”
