Chapter 8 - The Collapsing Alliance

The fragile bond of greed and deceit that had held Gabriel and Bianca together for months dissolved into vicious, clawing self-preservation in less than sixty seconds.
Bianca scrambled away from the defense table, her designer dress tearing slightly at the hem as she threw herself toward the railing, looking desperately at the armed bailiffs. “I want a separate attorney! I am cooperating with the state! Look at my phone—I have voice memos of him threatening me if I didn't help him forge the signatures!”
Gabriel sneered, his eyes filled with venomous hatred as he stared at the woman he had promised the world to just an hour ago. “You greedy parasite. You spent every dime of the embezzled corporate funds on luxury cars and apartments in Miami while I took all the legal risks. You wrote the draft of the property transfer yourself!”
“Liar!” Bianca shrieked, spinning around to point a trembling, manicured finger at him. “You told me your wife was a pushover! You told me her family’s money was practically ours for the taking!”
Judge Barrett watched the spectacle with cold, unimpressed eyes. She didn't need to orchestrate their downfall anymore; they were tearing each other to pieces right in front of the court stenographer.
“Enough,” Judge Barrett said, her voice cutting through their mutual recriminations like a scalpel. “Your toxic loyalty to each other has expired. The court has heard more than enough evidence to establish a multi-tier conspiracy involving felony fraud, forgery, extortion, and endangerment of a minor and an unborn child.”
The judge picked up her pen, signed the top document in the red-stamped folder, and looked directly at the lead FBI agent.
“Federal agents, take custody of Mr. Albright and Ms. Shepherd immediately,” Judge Barrett ordered. “Bail is denied across the board due to extreme flight risk and clear danger to the community. Transport them to the county federal holding facility to await grand jury indictment.”
“No... no, please!” Bianca wailed, her legs giving out beneath her as two federal agents stepped forward, grabbed her by the arms, and hauled her upright, her designer shoes dragging uselessly against the floor.

Gabriel didn't fight back. He sat slumped in the wooden chair, his head bowed, staring blankly at the floor as the heavy steel handcuffs were re-secured and he was hoisted to his feet by the bailiffs. As they dragged him past Penelope, he didn't dare look up. The illusion of his charm, his success, and his absolute control had been utterly and permanently shattered.
As the side doors closed behind the prisoners, taking the screaming and the weeping with them, a heavy, cleansing silence settled over the courtroom.
