Chapter 3 - The Safe Deposit Box

The sound wasn't heavy enough to be a piece of furniture or a falling box. It was a sharp, metallic clatter, followed by a muffled curse that definitely didn't belong to Claire.

Rachel froze. Daniel bolted past her, sprinting up the stairs two at a time, panic distorting his features. Claire, what are you doing? Get away from there!

Rachel followed close behind, Cooper trotting faithfully at her heels.

When she reached the master bedroom, the scene inside made her stop dead in her tracks. The walk-in closet door—a heavy oak panel that Daniel had kept padlocked for the past two months under the guise of storing confidential legal files—was standing wide open.

Inside the small secret alcove, a heavy metal fireproof safe had been dragged out from beneath the floorboards. Its reinforced door hung open on its hinges, and thousands of dollars in banded cash, alongside a stack of legal documents, lay scattered across the plush carpet.

Claire stood over the open safe, her breathing ragged, staring down at a specific document she clutched in her trembling hand.

""You lied about that too,"" Claire whispered, her voice hollow as she looked up at Daniel, who had just skidded to a halt in the doorway. You told me you didn't have any liquid assets, that the firm was freezing your accounts because of the pending partnership review.

Daniel lunged forward to grab the papers, but Rachel was faster. With a sharp, decisive movement, she stepped between them and snatched a folded legal folder from the floor.

""Let's see what else my wonderful husband has been hiding in our bedroom floorboards,"" Rachel muttered.

She unfolded the document. It wasn't corporate tax paperwork. It was a property deed—dated four months ago—transferring ownership of the Maplewood vacation cabin, along with three commercial real estate plots in downtown Denver, entirely into a single-member LLC named Apex Holdings.

The sole beneficiary listed on the LLC wasn't Daniel Sinclair.

It was Arthur Sterling.

Rachel’s breath caught in her throat. Arthur Sterling. The senior managing partner of the firm, and the very man who had overseen the massive commercial redevelopment project in Denver that Rachel had spent the last three months managing away from home.

She looked up at Daniel, her eyes narrowing into dangerous slits.

""You didn't just sleep with your boss's secretary, did you, Daniel?"" Rachel asked, her voice dropping into a chilling, level register. You were running a financial conduit through my project.

Daniel slumped against the doorframe, all the fight draining out of him in a single, pathetic exhale. He looked ten years older than he had downstairs. It was an investment opportunity, Rachel. Sterling had inside information on municipal zoning changes. I needed seed capital, and the only way to get it was by leveraging our home equity line of credit.

""You leveraged our house?"" Rachel's voice cracked, the magnitude of his betrayal finally hitting home with crushing weight. You risked everything we built—everything my father helped me put a down payment on—to play high-stakes real estate poker with your boss?

Claire dropped the documents she was holding, covering her face with her hands as silent, heavy sobs wracked her body. I thought you loved me, she choked out. I thought we were building a future.

""I do love you, Claire—"" Daniel started, reaching out a desperate hand.

Don't you dare touch her, Rachel snapped, stepping physically between them. You don't love anyone, Daniel. You love control. You love power. And most of all, you love playing a smart man while being the most pathetic coward in this zip code.

Rachel turned on her heel, clutching the property deeds and financial statements to her chest. I'm taking these papers. And Cooper. And if either of you tries to stop me, I won't just call a divorce lawyer—I'll hand this entire portfolio directly to the federal fraud division where Arthur Sterling's name is already sitting at the top of an active audit.

She walked out of the bedroom, leaving Daniel kneeling on the floor among his scattered lies, but as she reached the top of the stairs, her phone buzzed violently in her pocket with an incoming call from an unknown Denver number.
