Chapter 4 - The Denver Connection

Rachel stopped on the landing, her thumb hovering over the screen. The caller ID displayed a restricted Denver area code—the exact zone where her three-month commercial contract had just wrapped up.

She swiped and brought the phone to her ear.

""Rachel Bennett?"" a sharp, authoritative female voice asked without preamble.

""Yes. Who is this?""

""This is Special Agent Vance with the federal commercial fraud division. I'm calling regarding your recent oversight audit of the Vanguard Holdings downtown redevelopment project.""

Rachel’s stomach executed a violent backflip. She glanced back toward the master bedroom, where Daniel was still picking up his scattered cash, before walking quickly down the stairs toward the front door.

""I finished my audit report three days ago and submitted it to the regional director,"" Rachel said carefully, stepping out onto the front porch where the cool autumn air hit her face like a splash of ice water. Is there a problem with the numbers?

""The numbers are fine, Ms. Bennett. In fact, they're too clean,"" Agent Vance replied, her tone unyielding. When our forensic accountants cross-referenced the subcontractor payouts on your ledger, we found a series of ghost shell corporations funneling nearly two million dollars in municipal development funds into private personal accounts.

Rachel stopped at the bottom of the porch steps, Cooper pressing close against her knee. Ghost corporations? What does that have to do with me?

""One of those shell accounts—Apex Holdings—was incorporated using a residential address matching your primary domicile in suburban Chicago, registered under your husband's legal social security number, with co-signature authorization granted to Arthur Sterling's executive secretary, Claire Miller,"" the agent stated flatly.

The pieces clicked together in Rachel’s mind with the terrifying precision of a falling guillotine.

Daniel wasn't just playing real estate poker. He was the primary money laundering conduit for Arthur Sterling's entire criminal enterprise, using Rachel's professional travel schedule as a convenient smokescreen to run illegal wire transfers right out of their home office. And Claire wasn't just a random mistress—she was Sterling's trusted administrative plant, placed in Daniel's life to ensure the pipeline stayed secure.

""Ms. Bennett? Are you still there?"" Agent Vance’s voice cut through Rachel's spiraling thoughts.

""I'm here,"" Rachel whispered, her hand tightening around the property deeds in her bag. And I happen to have the physical hard copies of the Apex Holdings property deeds and bank transfers sitting right here in my hand.

On the other end of the line, there was a sharp intake of breath. You have the physical deeds? Where are you right now?

""I'm standing outside my house,"" Rachel said, her voice steadying as a fierce, cold resolve took root in her veins. And if you send a federal team here within the next twenty minutes, you can catch both the primary operator and his co-conspirator before they have a chance to shred the hard drives in the basement.

""Stay where you are, Ms. Bennett. Do not let anyone leave the premises. We're dispatching local field units and federal marshals to your location right now,"" Agent Vance ordered.

The line went dead with a click.

Rachel lowered the phone slowly. She looked back at the house. Through the open front door, she could see Daniel walking down the stairs, suitcase in hand, frantically whispering into his cell phone while Claire followed behind him, wiping tears from her face. They were packing up. They realized the game was up.

Rachel unzipped her leather tote, sliding the federal documents safely inside, and unsnapped the latch of Cooper's leash.

""Stay close, boy,"" she murmured to the dog.

As Daniel pushed open the front door, shouting for Claire to hurry up and get in the car before the authorities caught wind of what was happening, the wail of approaching sirens erupted from the end of the suburban street, cutting through the afternoon air like a warning bell.
