Chapter 9 - The Letter on the Chest

“Don't touch him! He's bleeding out!” Agent Vance shouted into her shoulder radio, her voice cutting through the heavy silence of the bedroom. “Medic team to the master suite, second floor! We have a severe trauma victim with exsanguinating injuries in the ceiling crawlspace! Move, move, move!”

Within seconds, heavy boots thudded up the stairs as two federal tactical medics rushed into the bedroom, carrying trauma kits and floodlights that instantly illuminated the grim scene.

Rachel stood frozen near the edge of the bed, her hands trembling as the image of the carved letter V burned itself into her retinas.

V.

It wasn't just an initial. It was a signature.

“He’s alive, but barely,” one of the medics shouted, snapping open a saline drip and pressing gauze against Kincaid’s side. “Pulse is thready and erratic. We need to get him down to an ambulance right now or he won't make it five minutes.”

As the medics hoisted Kincaid’s limp, bloodied body down through the narrow hatch onto a portable backboard, Agent Vance stepped back down into the room, wiping a streak of soot from her forehead. She looked at Rachel, her professional armor cracking slightly under the weight of the realization.

“Kincaid was supposed to be testifying before the grand jury in Chicago tomorrow morning,” Vance said, her voice tight with suppressed fury. “He held all the encrypted ledger keys for Vanguard Holdings. If he dies, the entire financial conspiracy dies with him, and every shell company—including Daniel’s—goes untouchable under federal privacy statutes.”

“And whoever is watching us knew that,” Rachel said quietly, pulling the micro-camera out of her blazer pocket and holding it up in the harsh glare of the medic's floodlight. “They didn’t just monitor the house, Agent Vance. They hunted him inside our home while we were downstairs talking to you.”

Vance stared at the black cylinder in Rachel’s hand. She reached out and snatched it, popping open the tiny micro-SD card slot at the base of the device with her fingernail.

“There’s a localized backup chip inside,” Vance murmured, squinting at the tiny gold contact points. “If the live stream was intercepted, this local card might still have the facial data of the person who uploaded it to the server.”

Before Vance could slide the chip into her tactical reader, a sharp, piercing alarm began to wail from the front driveway below.

It wasn't the police sirens. It was the electronic proximity alarm of Agent Vance’s own command SUV.

Simultaneously, the portable radio clipped to Vance’s tactical vest burst into a burst of frantic static and shouting voices.

“Agent Vance! Sector Four! We have a security breach at the rear gate! A vehicle just rammed the blockade—wait, visual confirmation! The suspect vehicle is a black unmarked transport van matching the description of the local intelligence detail, and they’re heading westbound on Maplewood toward the highway!”

Vance cursed loudly, slamming her fist against the bedroom wall. “Damn it! They used Kincaid as a distraction to draw our perimeter units inward while their extraction team made their move.”

Rachel felt a cold spike of dread pierce straight through her heart. She thought of Cooper downstairs, she thought of the federal agents scattered across the lawn, and then she thought of the micro-SD card resting in Agent Vance’s hand.

“They aren't running away from the investigation, Agent Vance,” Rachel said, her voice dropping into a terrifyingly steady calm. “They’re coming back for what’s on that chip.”
