Chapter 30 - The Phantom Bidder

The morning air in Chicago was crisp, carrying the metallic scent of Lake Michigan and the low hum of a city waking up to a new era of corporate dominance. From my executive suite on the top floor of the Hale Tower, the view of the skyline was an unbroken monument to our family's absolute supremacy. Vesper Capital was a fading memory, its liquidated assets successfully absorbed into our foundation, and Lucas was proving himself a master strategist as the Chief Operating Officer. Yet, peace in an empire of our scale was never more than a temporary illusion.
At precisely nine o'clock, the heavy mahogany double doors of my office swung open without a customary knock. Marcus strode in, his expression tight, carrying an encrypted secure tablet that flashed a stark crimson warning banner.
"We have a breach in the European block, Claire," Marcus said, bypassing pleasantries and dropping the tablet onto my desk. "Within the last forty-eight hours, an anonymous shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands under the designation Aethelgard Holdings has begun aggressively vacuuming up floating shares of our secondary European subsidiaries."
I leaned forward, my fingers steepled as I scanned the incoming data streams. The volume was astronomical, routed through multiple obfuscated layers designed to bypass standard SEC and European Securities and Markets Authority thresholds.
"Who is behind the shell?" I asked, my voice dangerously calm.
"That’s the complication," Marcus replied, pulling up a secondary schematic. "The layers trace back through a dead-end trust in Zurich, but the digital fingerprint matches an old player. Someone we thought was buried under federal indictments alongside Alistair Vesper. Victor Sterling."
A cold draft seemed to sweep through the sunlit office. Victor Sterling was Alistair’s former chief legal architect and the man who had engineered the most predatory short-selling campaigns against Richard’s administration a decade ago. He had slipped through the net of the Omega Protocol, vanishing into the murky underbelly of offshore tax havens just as the federal net closed.
"He’s playing a long game," I murmured, standing up and walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows. "He knows he can't touch our controlling eighty-five percent stake in Hale Hospitality, but he wants to strangle our international expansion veins—London, Tokyo, and now the new eco-resorts in New Zealand."
"Sterling isn't acting alone," Marcus added grimly. "Our intelligence feeds indicate he’s secured backing from a sovereign wealth fund in Eastern Europe. They’re positioning themselves to force a hostile proxy restructuring on our upcoming overseas developments, aiming to choke our liquidity right as we finalize the New Zealand acquisition."
Just then, the private connecting door to the executive board suite opened, and Lucas stepped through, holding a physical dossier of the New Zealand blueprints. He paused, sensing the palpable tension in the room, his sharp eyes darting from Marcus to me.
"I heard the alert chime from the outer terminal," Lucas said, his voice carrying the firm, resolute tone that reminded me so much of Arthur in his prime. "Is Sterling making a move?"
"He is," I answered, turning to face my son. "He thinks he can crawl out from the wreckage of Vesper’s syndicate and bleed us from the outside."
Lucas didn't flinch. Instead, a cold, calculating smile touched the corners of his lips—a look born of a lifetime surrounded by corporate titans and hardened by the legacy of the Hale name. He walked over to the desk, tossing the New Zealand portfolio down with a sharp thud.

"Let him try," Lucas said smoothly. "If Sterling wants a proxy war on international soil, we’ll give him one. But we aren’t just going to defend our borders. We’re going to trap him in his own liquidity web and strip his shell corporation down to its bare shell."
The game had changed, but the rules remained ours. The shadow of the past had returned, and it was time to teach them why the Hale dynasty never negotiates with ghosts.
