Chapter 1 - The Mercy Ward

The fluorescent lights of Mercy Medical Center buzzed with a relentless, sterile hum that seemed to vibrate directly behind Charles Miller’s eyes. He stood in the sterile hallway outside Room 412, his heavy wool coat still damp from the sudden Miami downpour that had greeted his flight four hours after the hospital's phone call.
His phone felt heavy in his palm, the screen dark. He hadn't called Sarah since the morning she fled his hotel room a month ago, convinced her stony silence was her way of slamming the door on their past for good. Now, here he was, listed as her emergency contact—a legal tether to a woman he had legally divorced, yet whose sudden vulnerability tore open every wall he had spent three years building.
A nurse in crisp blue scrubs pushed open the door to Room 412, stepping out into the corridor with a clipboard tucked beneath her arm. She noticed Charles standing stiffly against the wall.
"Mr. Miller?" she asked, her voice softened by professional caution.
Charles stepped forward instantly, his chest tight. "Yes. I'm Charles. How is she? What happened?"
The nurse glanced down at her notes before meeting his eyes. "She's stable for the moment, Mr. Miller, but her vitals have been erratic. She suffered severe internal hemorrhaging. Dr. Hayes is inside with her now, but you should know... Mrs. Sanders lost a significant amount of blood before the ambulance brought her in."
Charles felt the floor tilt beneath his feet. "Hemorrhaging? From what?"
Before the nurse could answer, the door to the room swung open wider, and a tall, silver-haired doctor stepped out, peeling off a pair of latex gloves. He looked at Charles with sharp, evaluating eyes.
"Are you Charles?" Dr. Hayes asked.
"I am. Doctor, what is going on? The nurse mentioned hemorrhaging—was it an accident? Did someone hurt her?"
Dr. Hayes sighed, gesturing down the quiet hallway toward a small, semi-private consultation nook away from the nurses' station. "Walk with me, Mr. Miller."
They stopped by a high window overlooking the wet, neon-lit Miami streets. Dr. Hayes crossed his arms, his expression grave.
"Mrs. Sanders didn't sustain physical trauma from an accident, Mr. Miller," Dr. Hayes said quietly. "Her body went into shock following a severe medical crisis related to an advanced, highly aggressive form of uterine fibroids combined with an undiagnosed blood clotting disorder."
Charles stared at him, trying to process the medical terminology. "What does that have to do with... why did she call me?"
Dr. Hayes gave him a long, searching look. "Because when we admitted her, our surgical team discovered something else during the emergency procedure. Something Sarah has been hiding from everyone—including, it seems, her medical files."
Charles gripped the windowsill, his knuckles turning white. "What?"
May you like
"Mrs. Sanders wasn't just dealing with a sudden internal hemorrhage," Dr. Hayes said carefully. "She had a late-stage miscarriage, Mr. Miller. She was nearly fourteen weeks pregnant."
