Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Mirror

Charles stared at her, the room seeming to shrink around them. "Hiding? From who, Sarah? You moved to Miami for a hotel management job. That's what mutual friends said. That's what you told everyone."

A bitter, humorless smile touched the corners of Sarah’s pale lips. "Management job? Charles, nobody gives a disgraced corporate compliance auditor a high-level resort position in Miami without a clean paper trail. And my paper trail was completely fabricated."

"Fabricated by who?"

Sarah pulled herself up slightly against the pillows, wincing as a sharp wave of pain crossed her features, but she forced herself to keep talking, her eyes darting nervously toward the doorway as if expecting someone to walk in at any second.

"Do you remember why we really drifted apart three years ago?" she asked, her voice dropping lower. "You thought it was burnout. You thought the long hours at my old firm in Chicago killed us."

"That's what you told me," Charles said defensively. "You said the corporate pressure was too much."

"It wasn't pressure, Charles. It was fear," Sarah confessed, tears spilling over her lashes. "Six months before our divorce, I was assigned to audit an offshore logistics subsidiary called Meridian Holdings. I found discrepancies—billions of dollars in illegal shell transactions tied to real estate developments across the Midwest and Florida. Real estate developments backed by your biggest construction clients, Charles."

Charles felt his breath catch in his throat. "My clients? What does that have to do with us?"

"Everything," Sarah whispered. "The night I found those files, someone broke into my apartment while I was asleep. They didn't steal my laptop; they left a single photograph on my kitchen table—a picture of you walking out of your construction office in Chicago. A silent warning: keep digging, and your husband pays the price."

The silence that followed was deafening. The hospital monitor's steady beep sounded like a countdown clock.

"That's why I divorced you," Sarah wept, her hands trembling violently. "I didn't want to leave you. I loved you more than anything. But it was the only way to sever our lives completely, to make them believe I didn't care about you anymore, so they wouldn't use you to silence me."

Charles stood up abruptly, pacing the small confines of the hospital room, his hands raking through his hair. "And when we ran into each other in Miami? Was that an accident?"

Sarah shook her head slowly, closing her eyes. "No, Charles. It wasn't. They tracked me down two months ago. They told me my time of hiding was over. And when I found out I was pregnant with your child... I knew that if they found out about the baby, I wouldn't just be a loose end anymore. I’d be dead."

Before Charles could process the terrifying weight of her confession, a sharp, metallic sound echoed from the hallway outside.

It was the heavy, deliberate click of a leather shoe against the linoleum floor, followed by the sound of the nurse at the station asking a sharp question—and receiving no reply.
