Chapter 6 - The Man in the Charcoal Suit

The fluorescent lights of Room 412 seemed to hum with a sudden, lethal vibration.
Charles didn't move an inch. He planted his weight on his heels, standing squarely between the door and Sarah’s hospital bed, his muscles coiled tight as steel wire.
"You're trespassing in a restricted medical unit," Charles said, his voice dropping into a low, menacing register that surprised even himself. "Step back out that door, or I'll put you through the drywall myself."
The man in the charcoal suit didn't flinch. A faint, cold smirk touched the corner of his mouth, entirely devoid of humor. He casually adjusted his cuffs, his gaze flicking past Charles to fix on Sarah, who was trembling violently against her pillows.
"Put away the hero act, Mr. Miller," the man said smoothly, stepping fully into the room and letting the door click shut behind him. "It doesn't suit a Chicago construction contractor who has no idea what kind of multi-million-dollar spiderweb his ex-wife crawled into. My name is Vance—Marcus Vance’s firm isn't the only one cleaning up messes in Florida, though my employers prefer a much quieter resolution."
Charles’s eyes narrowed. "Vance? You're not with the hospital. Who sent you? Meridian Holdings?"
"Meridian is just a shell on top of a shell," the man replied, taking another uninvited step forward. He reached into his inner jacket pocket, his movements deliberate and unhurried. "Sarah knows that better than anyone. She spent six months downloading encrypted ledgers before she skipped town, thinking she could outrun a syndicate that has roots in every major real estate portfolio from Chicago to Miami—including yours, Mr. Miller."
Sarah let out a sharp gasp from the bed, her voice cracking as she shouted, "Charles, don't listen to him! He's lying! He doesn't want the ledgers—he wants the decryption key I hid before I collapsed!"
The man’s eyes flashed with sudden, dangerous intent. His hand whipped out of his jacket—not holding a badge, but a heavy, suppressed automatic pistol.
Before Charles could process the movement, the door behind the intruder burst open with a violent crash. Three armed hospital security guards, alerted by the commotion at the nurse's station, swarmed into the room with batons and tasers drawn.
"Drop the weapon! Drop it right now!" the lead guard bellowed, leveling his weapon at the man in the suit.
The intruder cast one cold, assessing glance at the guards, then back at Charles. Without a word of panic, he slid the pistol back into his jacket, raised his hands in mock surrender, and smiled.

"This conversation isn't over, Mr. Miller," the man whispered smoothly. "Tell your ex-wife to enjoy her recovery. Because the next time we meet, there won't be any security guards to save you."
