Chapter 4 - The Classified Ledger

The kitchen smelled faintly of burnt cinnamon and shattered ceramic. Agent Gillespie stood by the scarred laminate counter, watching as two digital forensics specialists packed down specialized scanning equipment into rugged Pelican cases.

Captain Hargrove sat handcuffed to an iron-framed dining chair in the corner, his face bruised from the takedown, staring blankly at the floor. His arrogant demeanor was entirely gone, replaced by the crushing realization of what his illegal real estate land grab had actually targeted.

"You weren't looking for a narcotics operation, Captain," Dorothy said calmly, pouring herself a cup of black coffee from a dented percolator that had somehow survived the wreckage. She took a slow sip, her eyes fixed on him. "You were looking for the archive files pertaining to the Blackwood Land Trust acquisition of 1994."

Hargrove swallowed hard, refusing to meet her gaze. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"Of course you don't," Dorothy replied softly, walking over to the refrigerator and leaning against it. "You're just a blunt instrument hired by a regional syndicate to clear titles on federal buffer zones. But whoever bought your loyalty forgot to check my background file before sending you in to intimidate a sixty-eight-year-old widow."

Agent Gillespie stepped over, holding a secure encrypted tablet that was flashing a steady green authentication light. "She's right, Captain. The property deed to this house isn't just a residential title. It's a designated federal safe-haven parcel tied directly to executive oversight. When your municipal crew filed that fake eminent domain order, you pinged every automated security tripwire from Langley to the White House basement."

Hargrove’s head snapped up, panic flashing in his eyes. "You don't understand... the people behind this... they aren't local developers. They control the state Senate judiciary committee. If you arrest me, you think you're safe? They'll bury this entire operation by morning!"

Gillespie smiled coldly, tapping the screen of his tablet. "Captain, the moment your tactical team smashed that front door, our automated uplink transmitted a full situational package to the Department of Justice, the FBI Counter-Intelligence Division, and the Oval Office briefing desk."

He leaned down close to Hargrove's ear. "Your handlers aren't going to bury this. They're going to deny you ever existed."

Before Hargrove could scream a protest, a heavy black transport van idling outside honked its horn twice—the secure signal indicating the arrival of the federal transport convoy.
