Chapter 8 - Setting the Trap

Within forty-five minutes, the chaotic remnants of Hargrove's raid had been carefully curated to tell a very specific story.

The Secret Service tactical units withdrew into the dense Virginia tree line, leaving behind only the broken front door, the shattered china, and the haunting stillness of a home seemingly left to its defenseless occupant. Dorothy remained inside, sitting rigidly on the edge of her living room couch beneath the tilted frame of her late husband’s military shadowbox.

She wore a simple wool cardigan, her hands resting calmly in her lap, though her fingers hovered near a small, inconspicuous toggle switch wired into the underside of the coffee table.

Outside, the dense autumn fog rolled across the manicured lawns, swallowing the moonlight and wrapping the property in an eerie, suffocating silence.

At exactly 4:15 AM, the crunch of heavy tires on gravel broke the quiet.

A sleek, black executive town car rolled slowly up the unlit driveway, its headlights extinguished. It stopped fifty yards from the house, idling with a low, predatory hum. The rear door opened, and a tall man stepped out, his tailored charcoal overcoat sweeping against the damp grass. He wore thick leather gloves and moved with an unhurried, chilling grace.

The man walked up the splintered steps of the porch, bypassing the broken doorbell entirely. He raised his hand and gave three slow, deliberate raps against the ruined oak door.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

Dorothy didn't flinch. She looked toward the entryway, her voice carrying clearly through the empty room.
