Chapter 9 - The Face of the Cartel

The door pushed open smoothly, scraping against the splintered hardwood floor.
Step by measured step, Senator Marcus Vance stepped into the dim living room. He didn't look like a corrupt politician caught in a criminal conspiracy; he looked like a statesman visiting a constituent, his silver hair perfectly combed, his expression an unreadable mask of cold sophistication.
He glanced down at the shattered porcelain shards on the floor, then up at the empty military shadowbox before his eyes finally settled on Dorothy sitting calmly on the sofa.
"Dorothy," Vance said smoothly, his voice rich and steady as he slid off his leather gloves. "I must admit, when I heard Captain Hargrove's raid went sideways, I was deeply disappointed in his lack of finesse. But I suppose one can never truly outsource a delicate cleanup."
"Finesse was never Hargrove’s strong suit, Marcus," Dorothy replied, her tone completely devoid of fear. "Neither was politics. That's why you used him to launder your land acquisition funds through municipal shell companies."
Vance smiled faintly, walking slowly toward the center of the room and resting a hand on the back of an armchair. "You always were too sharp for your own good, Dorothy. Ever since your days at the DIA, you had a habit of looking at ledgers that weren't meant for analytical eyes. The Blackwood Land Trust isn't just a real estate portfolio; it's the foundation of a regional infrastructure project that will secure economic dominance for the next fifty years. You can't stop progress with a dusty federal archive."
"Progress?" Dorothy scoffed softly. "You call forging eminent domain orders, destroying family homes, and assassinating local auditors progress?"
"I call it necessity," Vance said, his voice hardening just a fraction as his eyes narrowed on her. "And now, we come to the part of the evening where you hand over the encryption keys to that little dead-man's switch you've so cleverly configured. Do that, Dorothy, and you can live out your remaining years in quiet comfort. Refuse, and your unfortunate heart condition will finally catch up with you before sunrise."
Vance reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a small, heavy metal drive. "This device contains a localized frequency jammer. The moment I plug it into your terminal, your dead-man's switch evaporates."
Dorothy tilted her head, a cold, knowing smile spreading across her lips. "Marcus... did you really think I kept the main server running on a residential line?"
Vance froze, his hand pausing mid-motion inside his coat.

Before he could speak, the front windows of the house blew outward in a synchronized crash of shattering glass as four heavy tactical flashbangs landed squarely on the living room floor.
