Chapter 10 - The Ghost in the Ledger

The heavy ebony cane never reached me.

Agent Maya Brooks intercepted the blow with her forearm, twisting Arthur’s wrist behind his back with practiced precision and slamming him face-first against the polished mahogany entry table. Steel handcuffs clicked around the patriarch's wrists with a sharp, final snap that echoed like a guillotine blade falling in the quiet foyer.

"Arthur Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy, racketeering, and the unlawful death of federal witness Thomas Reynolds," Maya stated coldly, reading him his rights as she pressed him down against the table.

Carol screamed, collapsing onto the bottom step of the staircase in a heap of designer silk and hysterics. Mark stood frozen against the wall, staring down at his own shaking hands as the federal marshals slipped a second pair of cuffs around his wrists.

"You can't do this... we're the Vances..." Mark whimpered, his voice cracking into a pathetic whine as an agent hauled him toward the open front door. "Mom, tell them... tell them to do something..."

Carol didn't answer. She just wept into her hands, completely abandoned by the myth of family supremacy that had governed her entire life.

I stood in the center of the chaotic foyer, watching them being led out into the cold morning light. The federal SUVs were parked in a neat row beside the courtyard fountain, their red-and-blue emergency strobes painting the neoclassical columns in rhythmic flashes of crimson and azure.

Frank Delaney stepped through the front door, carrying his familiar brown leather accordion folder tucked securely beneath his arm. He stopped a few feet away from me, looking around the grand manor with quiet satisfaction.

"Well, Diane," Frank said softly, adjusting his glasses. "It looks like the audit is finally complete."

"Not quite yet, Frank," I replied, taking the folder from his hands and opening the clasp. Inside lay the final document—a certified deed transfer application bearing my father’s signature from twenty-five years ago, proving that the Bexley estate had originally been purchased with his architectural firm's capital before Arthur forged the buyout following his disappearance.

As I stared at the signature, my phone buzzed in my hand.

It wasn't a call. It was a secure text notification from an unknown international IP address—a string of encrypted data packets downloading automatically from a remote server located somewhere in Zurich.

I tapped the notification open.

A single digital file appeared on the screen, labeled: PROJECT JANUS - MASTER OFFSHORE DIRECTORY (UNLOCKED).

Below the title was a message written in plain text, signed by an anonymous sender within the syndicate who had clearly decided to jump ship before the federal net closed entirely:

> “Congratulations on breaking the foundation, Mrs. Mercer. But Arthur was only the regional director. If you really want to know who ordered your father's file classified at the federal level back in 1999... check the beneficiary listed on page 402 of the Geneva ledger.”

My breath hitched in my throat. I scrolled frantically down the screen, bypassing the corporate names, the shell accounts, and the political donations, until my eyes locked onto page 402.

The primary beneficiary holding eighty percent controlling interest in Vance-Mer Holdings wasn't Arthur Vance.

It was the United States Department of Justice Office of Special Oversight—currently overseen by the sitting Deputy Attorney General who had signed my task force's authorization papers just three days ago.

Before I could process the terrifying implications of the name glowing on my screen, the front courtyard lights suddenly flickered and died, plunging the entire manor into absolute, unnatural darkness.
