Chapter 5 - Dawn at the Estate

The sun was just beginning to streak the gray Columbus sky with pale amber light as my Honda pulled through the wrought-iron security gates of the Mercer family estate in Bexley.

It was a sprawling, neoclassical manor surrounded by manicured boxwood hedges and towering oak trees—a monument to old money, unearned privilege, and decades of hidden corruption. For years, I had felt small standing in its marble foyer, made to feel like an outsider who should be grateful for a seat at their dining table.

Not anymore.

Behind my car, two unmarked federal SUVs rolled silently through the gates, their headlights cutting through the morning mist. Agent Maya Brooks sat in the passenger seat of the lead vehicle, while a team of federal marshals and local investigators prepared for execution.

I parked my car in the center of the circular driveway, stepped out into the crisp autumn air, and walked up the broad stone steps of the front porch. I didn't knock. I reached out, grabbed the heavy brass knocker, and let it fall three times against the mahogany door—a sharp, echoing sound that shattered the morning silence.

A moment later, the heavy lock clicked.

The door swung open. Carol Mercer stood in the doorway, wrapped in a silk designer bathrobe, a cup of steaming coffee in her hand. Her hair was still wrapped in a silk scarf, and her face wore an expression of supreme, unbothered annoyance.

"Diane?" Carol sneered, looking past me toward the empty driveway before noticing the two federal vehicles idling by the fountain. "What on earth are you doing here at six in the morning? And what are those cars—"

Before Carol could finish her sentence, I stepped past her, pushing the heavy door wide open and walking straight into the grand foyer.

"Diane! How dare you barge into my home!" Carol shrieked, slamming her coffee mug down onto the marble entry table so hard the liquid sloshed over the rim. "Mark! Mark, come down here right now and remove your ungrateful wife from my property!"

Footsteps echoed heavily from the grand staircase.

Mark appeared on the landing, wearing a silk dressing gown over his pajamas, his hair tousled, his face twisted in sleep-deprived rage. "What is the meaning of—"

He stopped dead in his tracks as the front door swung fully open, revealing Agent Maya Brooks and three armed federal marshals walking up the stone steps behind me, their badges gleaming in the morning light.

"Mark Mercer," Agent Brooks called out, her voice cutting through the cavernous foyer with chilling authority, holding up an arrest warrant signed by a federal judge. "You are under arrest for wire fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy against federal municipal assets. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."

Mark staggered backward, his face turning the color of chalk, looking wildly from the federal agents to his mother, and finally to me standing calmly in the center of the marble floor.

Carol lunged forward, her face contorted with rage. "You can't do this! Do you know who we are? We own this city! Mark, tell them! Tell them!"

Mark didn't say a word. He just stared at me, his lips trembling as the cold reality of handcuffs clicked around his wrists.

I walked slowly to the edge of the grand staircase, looked down at the woman who had tried to treat me like a servant, and smiled.

"Good morning, Carol," I said quietly. "Welcome to your final audit."

Suddenly, the security monitor mounted on the wall beside the front door flickered to life, flashing a silent, blinking red warning light from the perimeter gate—signaling that an unexpected convoy of black executive sedans had just breached the outer driveway, and someone very powerful was coming through the front gates.
