Chapter 9 - The Siege of Bexley Manor

The heavy oak front doors shuddered on their massive iron hinges as a secondary explosion rocked the outer perimeter gate, followed immediately by the screaming wails of multiple police sirens converging on the estate from all four directions.
"What is that?" Arthur roared, turning toward his lead operative. "Secure the perimeter! Find out who authorized a tactical breach!"
"It's not a local precinct breach, sir," the operative shouted into his sleeve communicator, his face pale as he stared at his wrist monitor. "It's the state police tactical unit—backed by federal marshals. They've sealed every access road within a two-mile radius!"
Mark’s composure completely shattered. He grabbed his grandfather’s coat sleeve, panic twisting his features into an ugly mask. "Grandfather! You said the state police were in our pocket! You said the governor—"
"Shut up, you fool!" Arthur snapped, shoving Mark away with a vicious strike of his cane.
Agent Maya Brooks didn't wait for permission. The moment the operative's attention was split by the chaos at the gate, Maya moved with explosive speed. She sidestepped, drew her service weapon, and struck the operative's wrist with a brutal downward blow, sending the suppressed pistol clattering across the marble floor.
Before the other three suits could react, Captain Sarah Lawson burst through the shattered side conservatory doors, followed by half a dozen heavily armed federal agents, their assault rifles raised and locked.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Drop your weapons! Hands on your heads, now!" Lawson roared, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling with absolute authority.
The private operatives looked at Arthur, then at the wall of federal firepower aimed squarely at their chests. Slowly, reluctantly, they raised their hands and dropped to their knees on the marble tiles.
Arthur Vance stood motionless in the center of the foyer. He didn't drop to his knees. He didn't raise his hands. He simply straightened his coat, leaned his weight back onto his ebony cane, and glared at Maya and Lawson with venomous hatred.
"You've arrested an old man and seized a house, Agents," Arthur rasped, his voice dripping with sinister confidence. "You haven't won a damn thing. The ledger is decentralized. The syndicate operates across five different continents. By tomorrow morning, my legal team will have every single one of you disbarred, indicted, and ruined."
"Maybe," I said, walking slowly down the remaining steps of the grand staircase until I stood face-to-face with the man who had murdered my father. "But you're going to do it from a federal penitentiary cell."
I raised my phone, still displaying the blinking transmission status of the encrypted mirror file.
"And for the record, Arthur? My father's safe deposit box didn't just contain financial records." I leaned in close, whispering the words so only he could hear. "It contained the original blueprints of how you built this entire empire on blood and stolen land. And the state just seized every acre of it."

Arthur's eyes flared with sudden, unadulterated fury. He raised his cane, lunging forward with unexpected violence to strike me across the face—
