Chapter 2 - The Grand Ballroom

The Grandview Hotel ballroom was a masterclass in superficial luxury. Crystal chandeliers dripped from the ceiling, a string quartet played a lethargic version of a modern pop ballad, and four hundred of the city’s self-appointed elite clinked champagne glasses beneath arches of imported white roses.

Daniel stood on the elevated dais next to the wedding cake, his arm draped around Vanessa. He looked flushed, intoxicated by the applause and the flickering camera lights of the local society columnists.

“Thank you all for being here tonight,” Daniel said into the microphone, his voice echoing off the mahogany walls. He raised his champagne flute with a wide, triumphant grin. “As many of you know, closing one chapter often opens a far brighter one. Tonight isn't just a celebration of a new marriage. It’s a fresh start—unburdened, unhindered, and looking forward to an incredible future.”

Polite applause rippled through the room. Vanessa leaned in, whispering something in his ear that made him laugh out loud.

Near the back of the room, standing beside a pillar with a glass of sparkling water, was Julian Vance. Julian was a senior partner at one of the city’s oldest venture capital firms and a man who had spent fifteen years trying to figure out who was quietly bankrolling Daniel’s failing manufacturing bids.

Julian’s eyes scanned the crowd, eventually locking onto Daniel with a curious, analytical expression. He set his glass down on a passing waiter’s tray and walked deliberately toward the dais as the music swelled again.

“Daniel,” Julian said, catching him just as he stepped down from the platform.

Daniel beamed, extending a hand. “Julian! Glad you made it. I see the reception is living up to your standards.”

“It’s certainly extravagant,” Julian replied, shaking his hand briefly. His tone was cool, devoid of the sycophantic warmth everyone else was offering tonight. “I saw your announcement in the social registry. Quite a quick turnaround after twelve years of marriage.”

Daniel chuckled, waving a hand dismissively. “Well, you know how these things go. Sometimes relationships run their course. Claire was... well, she preferred a quieter life. It was time for a change.”

“A quiet life,” Julian repeated, tilting his head. He glanced around the ballroom, as if looking for someone. “Odd choice of words for a woman who held a controlling stake in more than a dozen international logistics and tech firms.”

Daniel’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. “What are you talking about?”

Julian pulled a folded printout from his suit jacket—a public corporate registry summary pulled straight from the state secretary’s database thirty minutes prior.

“I was doing some due diligence on a supply chain acquisition this afternoon,” Julian said smoothly, holding the paper up so the header was visible. “And I noticed an interesting pattern in the parent company filings. Do you know your ex-wife owns fourteen companies?”

The ambient noise of the ballroom seemed to fade into a distant hum.

May you like

Daniel stared at the paper in Julian’s hand, his smile completely vanishing. “That’s... that’s impossible. Claire didn't even have a job.”
