Chapter 5 - The Horizon

Ten thousand feet above the Pacific, the cabin of the private jet was quiet and warm.

I set my tablet down on the small mahogany table and looked out the window. Below us, the continent was a vast quilt of scattered lights cutting through the darkness.

My phone buzzed once on the leather seat beside me.

It was an automated security report from my chief financial officer in Chicago.

Primary corporate seizure notice dispatched to debtor at 11:42 PM. All subsidiary accounts successfully consolidated under Sterling Holdings.

I didn't smile, nor did I feel any surge of dramatic triumph. There was no hatred left in me for Daniel—only the quiet, unshakeable satisfaction of an equation finally balanced. He had spent twelve years believing that power belonged to whoever shouted the loudest in the room, forgetting that the real foundation of any empire is built by the person holding the pen.

The screen flickered, displaying a new incoming message—not from Daniel, and not from my legal team.

It was an encrypted ping from a private server in Zurich, requesting authorization to transfer a dormant international portfolio into our primary expansion fund.

I picked up the stylus, tapped the authorization icon, and watched the status bar shift from pending to complete.

The plane banked slightly, adjusting its course toward the horizon as the first faint gray streak of dawn began to bleed across the edge of the sky.

My phone remained silent after that. Daniel was probably still standing on that balcony, staring at the ruins of a life he thought he had conquered, finally realizing the true cost of calling me forgettable.
