Chapter 4 - The Midnight Call

The phone rang four times before a gruff, half-asleep voice answered on the other end.

“Daniel? Do you know what time it is? I’m at the reception—”

“Shut up, Richard,” Daniel barked into the receiver, pushing open the heavy glass doors that led out onto the hotel’s deserted balcony. The cold winter air hit his face, but he didn't feel it. “The corporate registry. The holding groups. Look them up right now.”

There was a rustling sound of bedsheets on the other end, followed by the faint click of a laptop opening.

“What are you talking about, Daniel? We finalized the divorce settlement this morning. You got the manufacturing firm, the commercial property, and the primary assets. It’s done.”

“It’s not done!” Daniel shouted, his voice cracking with rising panic. “Julian Vance just showed me a filing. Claire owns fourteen companies. She’s the primary guarantor on our operating loans!”

A heavy silence hung over the phone line.

“Richard? Are you still there?”

“Daniel...” the lawyer’s voice sounded suddenly hollow, drained of all professional confidence. “I’m looking at the master ledger right now. The debt instruments... they aren't backed by the commercial bank. They’re held privately by a venture trust registered under her maiden name.”

Daniel gripped the stone balustrade of the balcony until his fingers ached. “Call them. Call the trust. Negotiate whatever terms they want. Offer them a stake in the company—”

“We can’t negotiate, Daniel,” Richard interrupted, his voice tight with dread. “The trust isn't a third-party lender. It’s an irrevocable holding entity. And according to the default clauses... the moment the primary guarantor’s marital status changed without a pre-approved corporate restructuring rider, all outstanding loans became immediately callable.”

“Callable?” Daniel’s breath caught in his throat. “What does that mean?”

“It means,” the lawyer said grimly, “that the bank doesn't own your company anymore. Claire does. And if those loans aren't satisfied by nine o’clock Monday morning, every asset you own—including the manufacturing plant, your personal accounts, and this hotel reception—is subject to immediate seizure.”

The phone slipped from Daniel’s numb fingers, clattering against the concrete floor of the balcony.

Down below, the city lights stretched out into the distance, indifferent and cold. Inside the ballroom, the string quartet struck up another cheerful melody, and the sound of laughter drifted through the glass doors, celebrating a victory that had vanished before the night was even over.
