Chapter 10 - The Horizon Ahead

Three days later, the autumn sunlight streamed through the tall windows of a quiet, sunlit apartment in downtown Boston, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air.

The transition back to solid ground hadn't been simple. There had been debriefings with federal investigators, formal statements given to aviation safety boards, and endless security reassurances coordinated by Arthur—the corporate attorney who had helped her untangle her old life and now stood ready to defend her legal standing against any lingering federal overreach.

I sat at the wooden kitchen island, sipping a cup of hot coffee while watching Leo build an elaborate fortress out of wooden blocks on the rug by the window. The television in the living room was playing a muted morning news broadcast, flashing a quiet headline about an ongoing internal ethics audit at the Department of Defense logistics division—a direct consequence of the document packet that had hit the wire in Madrid.

My phone buzzed on the counter. It wasn't an emergency alert or a cryptic military threat. It was an email from a private aerospace engineering firm in Cambridge, offering a consulting position for commercial flight control safety architecture. They had seen her technical breakdown of the Boeing avionics glitch in the official FAA incident report.

They wanted her expertise. They wanted her in the room where critical decisions were made—not as a ghost hiding from her past, but as an expert whose survival had earned her the right to shape the future of aviation.

I looked down at the screen, then over at Leo, who looked up and flashed a bright, gap-toothed smile as his block tower finally stood tall and stable.

I picked up the phone, tapped the reply icon, and began typing my response.

The past could no longer dictate the altitude of my life. The horizon was wide open, and for the first time in ten years, I was flying entirely on my own terms.
