Chapter 6 - The Descent from Altitude

The hum of the engines remained steady, but the cold weight of the text message felt heavier than any G-force Maya had ever pulled in an F-16 cockpit. They’re tracking this bird right now, and when you land in Madrid, the local authorities won't be waiting for passengers—they'll be waiting for you.

Maya looked down at Agent Vance, who was still wedged awkwardly between the server racks, nursing his bruised throat. The panic had drained from his face, replaced by a cold, bureaucratic resignation.

“Who sent it?” Maya asked, keeping her voice low and even.

Vance let out a dry, rattling chuckle. “You think I know the name of every director in the oversight subcommittee? To them, you’re not a mother, Maya. You’re a loose data packet that survived a purge ten years ago. When you input that Nevada coordinate, your signature lit up every radar screen from Langley to Stuttgart.”

Maya didn't answer. She reached down, patted Vance’s tactical vest, and lifted his encrypted satellite phone right out of his pocket before he could protest.

“You can’t keep that,” Vance muttered. “That’s a secure government frequency.”

“It’s mine now,” Maya said coldly.

She turned, grabbed the rungs of the vertical ladder, and climbed back up into the dark, quiet corridor of the first-class cabin. The aircraft was slicing smoothly through the night sky, four hours away from the Spanish coastline. To the three hundred passengers sleeping blissfully in economy and business class, nothing had happened. They didn't know about the override, the hijackers, or the invisible net closing around the woman in the green sweater.

When Maya slipped back into row 8, she found Leo still curled under his blue blanket, breathing softly, his cheek pressed against the plush pillow. The middle-aged woman across the aisle looked up, blinking sleepily.

“Everything alright, dear?” she whispered.

“Fine,” Maya forced a tight, reassuring smile. “Just a minor turbulence check with the flight deck.”

“Thank goodness,” the woman murmured, closing her eyes again.

Maya sat back down in seat 8A, pulling her blanket over her knees. But the weariness that had weighed on her earlier was entirely gone, replaced by a razor-sharp, calculating clarity. She pulled Vance’s satellite phone from her pocket, keeping it hidden beneath the fold of the blanket, and powered up its encrypted interface.

The screen flickered to life, displaying a secure inbox with a single incoming file attachment labeled: OPERATION MERIDIAN - DECLASSIFIED ADDENDUM (2016).

Her thumb hovered over the screen. Ten years ago, she had walked away from the Air Force because she thought silence would protect her son and preserve what little was left of her life after her wingman’s death. She had believed that if she hid deep enough, the invisible machinery of military oversight would eventually forget her.

Instead, she realized with a chilling jolt of truth, hiding had only made her a target. They hadn't forgotten her; they had simply been waiting for her to step out of the shadows. And now that she was back in the control seat, running away was no longer an option.
