Chapter 8 - The Terms of Engagement

Director Vance stepped fully into the aircraft cabin, his presence instantly dominating the narrow space. Behind him stood two armed local security guards, their hands resting casually near their holsters.
“You’ve caused quite a disruption over the North Atlantic, Major,” Vance said, his tone conversational, almost polite, as if they were discussing a delayed connecting flight rather than an active hostage and hijacking situation.
“If you call preventing a catastrophic avionics purge a disruption,” Maya replied, her voice dropping into the same icy composure she had used in the cockpit. She didn't flinch, didn't step back, and didn't let her eyes betray the frantic calculations running through her mind.
Vance’s gaze flickered momentarily toward the first-class aisle, where Leo could be seen through the gap in the partition, happily adjusting his backpack. A subtle, calculating shadow crossed the director’s face.
“An intelligent officer knows when she’s holding a losing hand,” Vance said quietly, stepping closer so the passengers behind him couldn't overhear. “The data you recovered from the avionics bay doesn't belong to you, Maya. It belongs to the Department of Defense. Hand over the secure terminal, walk off this plane with my security detail, and we can handle your little administrative indiscretion quietly—away from your son.”
The threat was clear, unspoken, and absolute. It wasn't about the data anymore; it was about leverage. If she surrendered the terminal, she would disappear into a black-site debriefing room, and Leo would be left stranded in a foreign country with no one to protect him.
But if she refused here, in front of international airport authorities and commercial witnesses, they couldn't simply make her vanish without triggering an immediate diplomatic and media firestorm.
Maya reached slowly into her pocket. Vance’s eyes narrowed with predatory anticipation, his hand extending slightly to receive the device.
Instead of the phone, Maya pulled out her passport and boarding pass, holding them out casually.
“I’m an American citizen traveling with a minor on a commercial ticket, Director,” Maya said, raising her voice just enough to carry down the galley aisle toward the flight crew. “If you want to detain me, you’ll need a signed international warrant from a federal magistrate—not a private request from a disgraced logistics director whose nephew was just locked in an airplane's baggage bay.”
Vance’s smooth expression cracked for a fraction of a second, a flash of genuine rage tightening the skin around his eyes. “You think technicalities will protect you?”
“No,” Maya said, stepping past him toward the open door of the jet bridge, keeping her movements calm and deliberate. “I think the digital copy of the Operation Meridian cover-up that I just auto-uploaded to three separate civilian legal journalists in Washington and Madrid will protect me.”
Vance froze, his hand halting mid-air. “You didn't.”

“Check your encrypted inbox, Director,” Maya said quietly, her eyes locking onto his with absolute triumph. “The game changed the moment you decided to threaten my son.”
