Chapter 12 - The Sealed Name

I made the seven-mile drive across town in under ten minutes, the military training I thought I had packed away surging back into my veins with cold, calculated precision. Every street corner, every shadow under the suburban streetlights felt like an active perimeter.

When my truck pulled into the cul-de-sac, the silver sedan was already gone, leaving only the faint scent of exhaust in the humid autumn evening. The old house—the two-story colonial I had spent ten years paying down—sat illuminated under the harsh glare of floodlights.

Lauren was standing behind the locked glass storm door, her arms wrapped tightly around her chest. When she saw my headlights, she unlocked the deadbolt and stepped out onto the porch, clutching a pale manila envelope against her ribs.

"David," she breathed, looking past my shoulders into the dark street. "I thought he was going to come through the back when the lights turned on."

"Give me the envelope," I said, keeping my voice level, stripped of anger or judgment.

She handed it over with trembling fingers. On the front, written in sharp, heavy black ink, were the words: *For Tyler. Time to tell your dad what we agreed on.*

A knot hardened in the pit of my stomach. "What is this, Lauren?"

"I swear to God, David, I don't know," she pleaded, tears welling in her eyes. "Julian hasn't contacted me since November. When you filed the papers, he disappeared. He told me he was leaving the state. I thought he was out of our lives completely."

"Then why does he have business with our sixteen-year-old son?"

Lauren couldn't answer. She looked down at the porch floorboards, shrinking under the weight of her own past choices.

I didn't wait for Tyler to get home to find out. I slid my thumb under the sealed flap and ripped the envelope open. Inside wasn't a handwritten threat. It was a certified bank statement from an overseas commercial credit account, dated three weeks ago, bearing Tyler’s social security number alongside Julian Vance's legal signature—with an outstanding debt balance of eighty-four thousand dollars.
