Chapter 14 - The Secret in the Basement

Inside the kitchen, the house was suffocatingly quiet. Lauren sat at the dining table, her head in her hands, while Tyler stood near the back door, refusing to sit down. He looked at me with an expression that was half defiance, half terrifying vulnerability.

"Start talking, Tyler," I said firmly, placing the credit statement flat on the wooden table between us. "From the beginning."

Tyler swallowed hard, his voice cracking before he found his footing. "You think Julian was just Mom's boyfriend. You think she met him at a gym or some bar while you were deployed."

"Tyler, stop," Lauren cried out softly, her voice muffled by her hands.

"No, Mom! He’s back! He’s going to ruin everything anyway!" Tyler turned to me, his chest heaving. "Julian was renting the detached garage workshop down on Old Mill Road—the one Uncle Keith used to own. When you shipped out, Uncle Keith asked Julian to help Mom with the house repairs because the roof had that massive leak."

I remembered the roof. Lauren had told me in an email seven months into the deployment that an insurance payout had covered the contractor.

"Julian didn't fix it for free, Dad," Tyler continued, tears finally spilling down his cheeks. "He knew you were overseas with an elite logistics unit. He kept asking about your military supply clearance. He asked Mom first, but she told him to go to hell. So he came to me."

"He came to you for military logistics clearance?" I asked, a chill running through my chest.

"He told me that if I didn't help him set up a proxy shipping account using my student ID and the military dependent paperwork you left in the safe, he was going to tell the entire neighborhood and your commanding officer that Mom had been sleeping with him since before you even deployed." Tyler choked on a sob. "He said you’d get dishonorably discharged for domestic instability, and Mom would lose the house. I was trying to protect you, Dad. Both of you."

I closed my eyes for a single second, absorbing the depth of the trap that had been laid under my roof while I was thousands of miles away guarding someone else's borders.

"Where is the equipment Julian was shipping, Tyler?"

Tyler looked at the basement door behind the pantry. "It never left. It's still locked in the crawlspace beneath the furnace."
