Chapter 3 - The Face of the Stranger

Chiến dịch 10

At seven o’clock the next morning, Daniel was standing at the kitchen counter, sipping dark roast coffee and scrolling through emails on his phone. He looked rested, entirely unbothered by the previous evening’s confrontation.

“I have back-to-back presentations today,” he said, not looking up as I walked into the kitchen dressed in my charcoal appraisal suit. “I’ll probably be home late. Packing for the Lake Geneva retreat tonight so I don’t have to rush tomorrow.”

“Lake Geneva,” I said, pouring myself a glass of water. “How long will you be gone?”

“Just through Sunday night. Maybe early Monday morning if the closing dinners run long.” He set his mug in the sink, grabbed his coat, and walked over to kiss my forehead.

I didn't pull away. I looked straight into his hazel eyes, searching for a flicker of shame, guilt, or hesitation.

There was nothing. Just the calm, polished mask of a man who believed he had outsmarted everyone in the room.

“Have a good day at the site, Claire,” he murmured, grabbing his keys.

“Have a good day, Daniel.”

The moment his Audi backed out of the driveway, I picked up my purse and car keys.

I didn't drive to my appraisal site in Naperville. Instead, I merged onto the Kennedy Expressway, heading straight into the heart of downtown Chicago.

The Pinnacle Residences rose fifty stories above Lake Shore Drive, an imposing spire of tinted glass and limestone. I parked two blocks away and walked through the bitter morning wind toward a boutique coffee shop directly across from the residential entrance.

I sat at a window counter with a black coffee, pulling up Laura Hayes’s public LinkedIn profile on my phone.

She was thirty-two—ten years younger than Daniel and eight years younger than me. Senior VP of Urban Development at Peterson. Columbia graduate. Beautiful, sharp-featured, with dark hair cut into a sleek bob.

At 8:45 AM, the revolving doors of The Pinnacle turned.

Laura Hayes walked out into the crisp autumn air.

She was wearing a camel-colored cashmere coat, carrying a leather tote bag, and holding a small cardboard tray with two coffees.

Then, my heart slammed against my ribs.

A man stepped out behind her.

It wasn't Daniel.

It was an elderly gentleman with silver hair, leaning on an ebony cane, dressed in a tailored wool overcoat.

Arthur Peterson. The founder and principal owner of Peterson Development.

Laura smiled warmly, handing him one of the coffees, speaking with genuine affection before kissing his cheek. Arthur patted her shoulder, stepped into a waiting town car, and drove away.

Laura Hayes wasn't just a high-value client or a business lead.

She was Arthur Peterson’s daughter.

I watched her walk toward the corner to hail a cab. On her left wrist, catching the morning sunlight, was a delicate diamond tennis bracelet.

A bracelet identical to the one Daniel had claimed was purchased as a retirement gift for his managing partner’s wife four months ago—a purchase that had appeared on our joint expense account and had been casually dismissed as a company reimbursable.

I pulled out my phone and dialed the corporate switchboard for Peterson Development.

“Peterson Development, how may I direct your call?”

“Hi,” I said, keeping my tone crisp and professional. “I’m calling from the executive concierge at The Pinnacle regarding the private courier package for Ms. Laura Hayes and Mr. Daniel Vance. We have conflicting records for the international forwarding address post-Friday.”

There was a brief pause and the clatter of keyboard keys.

“One moment, ma'am. Let me check the relocation memo... Ah, yes. Mr. Vance’s permanent relocation package to the London affiliate takes effect November first. Ms. Hayes is listed as co-relocating under the partner transfer clause.”

“Thank you,” I said, my voice steady despite the roaring in my ears. “And their current marital status on file for the corporate tax exemption?”

“They are registered as married, pending international residency filings.”

The receptionist’s words hit me like a physical blow.

Daniel hadn't just told Laura they were moving together.

May you like

He had registered her with Peterson Development as his wife.
