Chapter 9 - The Boardroom Reckoning

Chiến dịch 10

The morning after the arrest, the 40th floor of the Peterson Tower was as quiet as a cathedral.

Arthur Peterson sat at the head of the long mahogany conference table, his silver hair catching the morning light, his face pale and carved with grief. His ebony cane leaned against his chair.

Beside him sat Laura, dressed in a sharp black suit, her eyes bruised with exhaustion but her posture completely upright.

Marcus and I sat across from them. Spread between us were the full audit ledgers, the unsealed court orders, and the forensic trace that Marcus’s firm had finalized at dawn.

“Two million, four hundred thousand dollars,” Arthur Peterson said, his voice trembling with controlled anger. “He diverted it through nine intermediary accounts before parking it in Belize.”

“The funds have been frozen, Mr. Peterson,” Marcus said. “Because Claire alerted us before he boarded the aircraft, the Cook County Chancery Court was able to serve emergency international freeze orders on the Belize depository before the local clearing house processed the transfer. Ninety-eight percent of the principal will be returned to Peterson Development by Tuesday.”

Arthur Peterson closed his eyes, taking a long, deep breath.

He leaned forward, looking across the table directly at me.

“Mrs. Vance,” the old man said softly. “You had every reason to take this evidence straight to the press. If the Tribune or the Wall Street Journal had broken this story this morning, our IPO would have collapsed. Peterson Development would have lost hundreds of millions in market capitalization.”

“I didn't do this to destroy your company, Mr. Peterson,” I said evenly. “I did it to protect my life. And to protect your daughter from a predator who was using both of us as collateral.”

Laura reached across the table, placing her hand gently over mine.

For a moment, neither of us spoke. There was no rivalry between us, no petty jealousy of the other woman. There was only the profound, shared survival of two women who had narrowly escaped the same trap.

“What will happen to the penthouse?” Laura asked quietly.

“The court has already voided the deed of transfer to Vance Horizon Holdings,” Marcus answered. “Because the down payment was funded via fraudulent loan proceeds drawn from Claire’s property, the title will be liquidated under a judicial receiver. The proceeds will completely satisfy the fraudulent mortgage Daniel placed on Claire’s home.”

“No,” Arthur Peterson interrupted, his voice firm and authoritative.

We all looked at him.

Arthur leaned on his cane as he stood up, his gaze steady on me.

“Peterson Development will pay off the four hundred and fifty thousand dollar mortgage on Mrs. Vance’s home in full, today, via wire transfer, as a consulting fee for uncovering internal corporate fraud.”

I stared at him in disbelief. “Mr. Peterson, that isn't necessary—”

“It is more than necessary,” Arthur said, a rare warmth softening his stern features. “You saved my family’s reputation, Mrs. Vance. And more importantly, you saved my daughter from boarding a flight that would have ruined her life. That is worth far more than a consulting fee.”

He turned to his legal counsel standing by the door. “Execute the wire immediately. And ensure Daniel Vance faces the maximum federal sentencing guidelines for every single count of wire fraud and grand larceny.”
