Chapter 5 - The Midpoint Collision

Chiến dịch 10

By Friday morning, our house was filled with the quiet rustle of garment bags.

Daniel walked into the kitchen wearing his tailored traveling suit, his leather weekender bag sitting by the front door. He looked impeccable. Every hair was in place; his shoes were polished to a mirror shine.

“I’m heading straight to the private terminal from the office,” he said, pouring coffee into a travel mug. “Don't wait up on Sunday, Claire. I’ll probably get in late.”

“Have a safe flight, Daniel,” I said, sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of tea.

He hesitated for a second, sensing something different in my posture, but his ambition was too loud for his intuition to register the danger. He leaned down, kissed my cheek, and whispered, “Take care of yourself.”

*Take care of yourself.* His final words to the woman he had lived with for over a decade.

“Always,” I replied.

The front door clicked shut. His car pulled away.

At 1:00 PM, four hours before his flight to London, I stood in the marble lobby of The Pinnacle Residences on Lake Shore Drive.

I was dressed in a tailored navy pantsuit, my hair pulled back in a sleek chignon, carrying a slim leather portfolio. Beside me stood Marcus Vance, tall, broad-shouldered, carrying a certified legal summons and an emergency injunction signed by a Cook County chancery judge two hours earlier.

“Are you sure you want to do this face-to-face?” Marcus asked quietly, his eyes filled with a mixture of family grief and fierce resolve. “We could let the process servers handle it at the airport gate.”

“No,” I said. “Laura Hayes needs to see the truth before he puts her on that plane.”

We stepped into the private elevator. Marcus pressed the key for Penthouse 4B.

The doors opened directly into a soaring, glass-walled foyer overlooking the gray expanse of Lake Michigan. The scent of white lilies filled the air. Luggage was stacked neatly by the console table: four matching Louis Vuitton suitcases bearing monogrammed tags: *L.V.*

Laura Hayes stood in the center of the living room, wearing a cream sweater and tailored trousers, checking an itinerary on her iPad.

She turned at the sound of the elevator, a bright smile on her face that vanished the moment she saw Marcus and me.

“Can I help you?” she asked, her voice sharp with sudden caution. “This is a private residence. How did you get access to the penthouse elevator?”

I stepped forward into the sunlit room, opening the portfolio in my hands.

“My name is Claire Vance,” I said evenly. “And the four hundred and fifty thousand dollars you used for the down payment on this floor came out of my mother’s estate.”

Laura stared at me, her brow furrowing in confusion. “What? Who are you? If this is a sick joke—”

“I am Daniel’s wife,” I said. “His only legal wife. For the past eleven years.”

Laura’s face drained of color. She looked from me to Marcus, then took a step back, her hand clutching the edge of a marble console table.

“That’s impossible,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Daniel divorced his ex-wife two years ago. We were married in Lake Tahoe in March. I have the marriage certificate in the safe!”

I pulled the certified copy of our active marriage license, along with the certified forensic analysis of her forged Nevada certificate, and laid them on the glass table between us.

“Look at the dates, Laura,” I said softly. “You aren't his wife. You’re his alibi.”
