Chapter 4 - The Midnight Corridor

Chiến dịch 21

Adrian was shoved into the sterile corridor by the security team as the double doors of Room 412 slammed shut behind him.

Through the small rectangular glass windows, he caught a frantic glimpse of green scrubs, stainless steel equipment, and Dr. Brennan leaning over Claire’s bed as they unhooked the monitors to wheel her toward the surgical theater.

"Claire!" Adrian shouted, pounding his fist against the reinforced glass.

"Step back, sir," the security guard ordered, planting himself directly in front of the doors. "You cannot enter the surgical bay."

"I am her husband!" Adrian yelled, his voice cracking with an ugly, jagged desperation. "I have medical power of attorney!"

"Actually, Adrian, you don't," Marcus Vance’s voice cut through the corridor like a scalpel.

Adrian turned around, his breathing ragged. Marcus stood ten feet away, leaning against the pale wall, holding a second red-labeled folder he had drawn from his briefcase.

"What did you just say?" Adrian hissed, taking two aggressive strides toward the older attorney.

"Claire updated her healthcare proxy in January," Marcus said, completely untroubled by Adrian’s posture. "The moment she received her high-risk diagnosis from Dr. Brennan. She named her cousin, Dr. Eleanor Wright, as primary medical decision-maker, with myself as alternate. You were removed from all medical directives eighty-two days ago."

Adrian stared at Marcus, his face pale beneath the harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital hallway. "She planned this. She’s been planning this for months."

"She didn't plan for you to walk out on her while she was having contractions, Adrian," Marcus said coldly. "She planned for the possibility that when the crisis came, you would do exactly what you always do: prioritize your reflection over your family."

Before Adrian could answer, his phone began vibrating relentlessly in his pocket.

He yanked it out. The caller ID displayed: *Vanessa Albright.*

Adrian looked at the screen, then at the heavy doors leading to the operating room, and then at Marcus Vance, who was watching him with an expression of quiet, disgusted pity.

Adrian answered, pressing the phone to his ear with trembling fingers. "Vanessa."

"Adrian? Where on earth did you go?" Vanessa’s voice was light, laced with the casual amusement she always adopted when she wanted to mask irritation. "The waiter said you ran out into the rain without even signing the check. Daddy’s associates are arriving at the Princeton Club at eight tomorrow morning for the preliminary signing. We need to go over the final terms of the mezzanine equity."

Adrian’s throat felt as though it were lined with sand. "Vanessa... did your father purchase credit default swaps on Whitmore Holdings debt through an offshore entity in Grand Cayman?"

The silence on the other end of the line was instantaneous.

It wasn't the silence of confusion. It was the heavy, suffocating silence of a predator that had just realized the prey had seen the net.

"Adrian," Vanessa said after four agonizing seconds, her tone shifting from playful flirtation to smooth, corporate patronizing. "I don't get involved in Daddy’s macro-hedging strategies. You know that. High-yield commercial financing is complicated. Everything our fund does is standard market practice."

"Is it standard practice to bet on my default before the ink on the contract is dry?" Adrian’s voice shook with suppressed fury.

"Don't be dramatic, Adrian," Vanessa said, her voice turning crisp and entirely devoid of warmth. "If your company is as solvent as you’ve spent the last six months claiming it is, why would you care about a credit default swap? You execute the project, the value increases, the CDS expires worthless, and Daddy loses his premium. Unless, of course... you were lying about your capital reserves."

Adrian gripped the phone so hard the glass screen creaked under his thumb. "Vanessa—"

"Are you at the hospital?" she asked suddenly, her voice dropping into pure, calculated malice. "Did Claire have a little fainting spell to bring you to your knees? Adrian, if you don't show up at the Princeton Club tomorrow at eight with the signed indemnity schedule, the syndicate pulls out. And I won't be able to convince Daddy to give you a second chance."

"Go to hell, Vanessa," Adrian whispered.

"See you tomorrow morning, Adrian," she said smoothly, and clicked off.

Adrian stood in the hallway, the dead line humming against his ear.

He slowly lowered the phone. Down the long corridor, the overhead speakers chimed with an urgent medical code: *"Code Blue, Labor and Delivery, OR 3. Pediatric team to OR 3 immediately."*

Adrian’s stomach dropped into a bottomless void.

*OR 3.* That was the room they had wheeled Claire into.

He ran toward the surgical bay doors, slamming his palms against the crash bars, but the electromagnetic locks held fast.

"Claire!" he yelled, his voice breaking into a sob that surprised even himself. "Claire, open the door!"

May you like

Marcus Vance stepped up beside him, his voice low and devoid of anger, replaced only by grim reality. "Banging on the glass won't undo what you did tonight, Adrian. Sit down. Pray if you know how. Because right now, the woman you thought was too weak to matter is fighting for your daughter's life, and she's doing it completely without you."

Adrian slowly slid down against the sterile wall, his designer suit bunching against the linoleum, his head buried in his hands as the rain continued to beat against the high, dark windows of Manhattan.
