Chapter 5 - The Weight of Breath

Chiến dịch 21

Forty-seven minutes passed in absolute silence.

Adrian sat on the vinyl waiting room bench, his wet coat discarded on the floor beside him, staring at his shoes. Every minute felt like an hour carved out of his skin. Memories he hadn't allowed himself to visit in years began creeping into the corners of his mind like smoke.

He remembered the early days. He remembered Claire sitting on the floor of a rented office on 23rd Street, wearing an oversized wool sweater, working twenty hours straight with three separate financial models open on her laptop while he pitched skeptical angel investors in the front room. Whenever an investor asked an impossible technical question about debt amortization or cash-flow waterfalls, Adrian would step out, ask Claire, and return with a brilliant, elegant answer that made him look like a prodigy.

She had never asked for credit.

*“The company needs a face, Adrian,”* she had told him once, laughing softly as she handed him a fresh cup of terrible office coffee. *“You’re the face. You’re good at it. I’ll make sure the bridge doesn't collapse under our feet.”*

And somewhere along the way, surrounded by private drivers, magazine covers, and the sycophantic applause of people who only cared about his capital, he had forgotten that he was just the face. He had convinced himself that he was the bridge.

The heavy double doors of the surgical corridor clicked open.

Dr. Brennan walked out, pulling off his surgical mask. His forehead was slick with sweat, his shoulders sagging with exhaustion.

Adrian scrambled to his feet so fast he stumbled, nearly knocking over a plastic brochure stand. "Charles. Tell me. How are they?"

Brennan stopped three feet away. He looked at Adrian for a long, silent moment, his expression unreadable.

"Your daughter was delivered at twelve-forty-two a.m.," Brennan said, his voice raspy. "Three pounds, eleven ounces. Her lungs are underdeveloped, and she experienced mild hypoxia during the placental separation."

Adrian’s breath hitched in his throat. "Is she... is she alive?"

"She is in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit," Brennan replied. "She is intubated and under a warming canopy. The next forty-eight hours will be critical, but she has a strong pulse. She’s fighting."

Adrian let out a ragged breath, pressing the heels of his hands into his eyes. "And Claire? What about Claire?"

"Claire suffered significant blood loss from a partial abruption," Brennan said, his jaw tightening. "We had to administer three units of whole blood. Her pressure is coming down, but she is heavily sedated. She’s stable, but she will remain in the surgical ICU until tomorrow evening."

"Can I see her?" Adrian asked, his voice cracking. "Just for two minutes. Please, Charles."

"No," Brennan said without hesitation. "She left explicit medical instructions before she went under general anesthesia. You are not permitted in her recovery room under any circumstances."

"Charles, I’m her husband!"

"And I am her physician," Brennan said coldly. "Any emotional distress could trigger another hypertensive crisis. I will not risk my patient’s life to indulge your guilt, Mr. Whitmore."

Brennan turned on his heel and walked back through the double doors, leaving Adrian standing alone under the harsh glare of the fluorescent tubes.

Marcus Vance stood up from his chair, buttoning his coat. "It’s two in the morning, Adrian. The emergency board meeting of Whitmore Holdings is scheduled for nine o'clock at our firm’s offices on Lexington Avenue."

Adrian turned to Marcus, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "What board meeting? I didn't call a board meeting!"

"Claire did," Marcus said calmly, checking his watch. "Under the powers granted to her by the Sovereign Trust activation. She has called a special session of the voting shareholders to review the Hudson Yards acquisition and vote on the removal of the Chief Executive Officer."

Adrian froze. "She can't remove me. I’m the founder."

"You own twenty-two percent of the common stock, Adrian," Marcus pointed out, his voice razor-sharp. "The Sovereign Trust controls fifty-four percent. The remaining twenty-four percent is split among the institutional board members—all of whom have just received copies of the Cayman Island CDS documents showing that Albright Capital intended to strip their assets."

Marcus picked up his briefcase. "If you want to save what remains of your professional reputation, I suggest you go home, shower, change your suit, and prepare your defense. Because at nine o’clock, Claire’s proxy will vote her shares. And unless you have an explanation that defies the laws of corporate governance, your tenure as head of Whitmore Holdings ends before noon."

Marcus walked toward the elevators, the soft click of his leather soles echoing down the empty hall until the elevator doors slid shut with a chime.

Adrian stood alone in the hallway.

Outside, the rain had finally stopped, replaced by a gray, freezing Manhattan fog.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. He took it out, expecting another frantic message from Vanessa or an alert from his PR team.

Instead, it was a notification from the private security terminal of his Park Avenue penthouse.

*Master Safe Opened. Access Code: Override Alpha.*

*Location: Penthouse Study.*

*Timestamp: 01:58 AM.*

Adrian stared at the notification. Override Alpha was a physical master key and single-use biometric protocol. Only two people in the world had access to it: himself, and Claire’s private estate manager.

Someone was inside his apartment, cleaning out the vault that held every original share certificate, every bearer bond, and the personal debt indemnities that tied him to the foundation.
