Chapter 8 - The Fall of Albright

Chiến dịch 21

At ten o’clock that morning, while Adrian was sitting on a stone bench in the cold drizzle of Madison Square Park with his cell phone disconnected by corporate IT, Vanessa Albright arrived at the Princeton Club in Midtown.

She wore a tailored ivory wool suit, her dark hair swept up in an elegant chignon, her signature red lipstick perfectly applied. Behind her walked two senior partners from Albright Capital, carrying leather folios containing the mezzanine debt execution agreements.

Vanessa expected to find Adrian pacing the private library, nervous, eager to please, desperate for her validation.

Instead, she found Marcus Vance sitting alone at the green-baize conference table, sipping black tea from a porcelain cup.

Vanessa stopped in her tracks, her manicured eyebrows drawing together in immediate irritation. "Mr. Vance? What is this? Where is Adrian?"

Marcus set down his tea cup with deliberate slowness. "Mr. Whitmore is no longer affiliated with Whitmore Holdings, Miss Albright. He will not be attending today’s signing."

Vanessa let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Is this a joke? Adrian is the managing partner. If he isn't here, the Hudson syndication terminates at noon, and Whitmore Holdings forfeits twenty-five million in non-refundable deposits."

"The Hudson syndication will not be terminating," Marcus replied, folding his hands over a pristine white envelope on the table. "At nine-fifteen this morning, Whitmore Holdings executed an alternative financing facility with Goldman Sachs. The debt tranche has been fully underwritten at four point two percent—a full one hundred and eighty basis points lower than the predatory rate Albright Capital offered."

The smile vanished from Vanessa’s face.

The two partners behind her exchanged sharp, anxious glances. One of them immediately pulled out his phone and began tapping furiously at the screen.

"That’s impossible," Vanessa hissed, taking a step toward the table. "Adrian signed an exclusivity agreement with us three days ago. If Whitmore Holdings executes another financing agreement, we will sue for breach of contract, freeze your assets in Delaware, and—"

"You won't be suing anyone, Miss Albright," Marcus interrupted, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp clinical cadence.

He slid the white envelope across the green felt.

Vanessa didn't touch it. "What is that?"

"A formal notification of legal referral to the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Department of Justice’s Southern District of New York," Marcus said.

Vanessa’s face paled beneath her makeup, but she maintained her sneer. "On what ridiculous grounds?"

"Market manipulation, insider trading, and fraudulent short-selling," Marcus answered, not blinking. "We have established an unbroken chain of custody showing that your personal communications with Adrian over the past three months coincided precisely with large-scale purchases of credit default swaps by your father’s shell entities in Grand Cayman."

Marcus leaned forward slightly. "You used non-public corporate disclosures obtained through your personal relationship with Mr. Whitmore to front-run the market. We have the text messages, Miss Albright. We have the hotel room reservations billed to corporate expense accounts. And we have the digital logs of the internal financial models Adrian sent to your personal email address."

The senior partner behind Vanessa stepped forward, his face dead white, holding his phone out to her. "Vanessa... look at Bloomberg."

Vanessa snatched the phone from his hand.

The top headline on the terminal was flashing in bright red:

*WHITMORE HOLDINGS OUSTS FOUNDER ADRIAN WHITMORE IN GOVERNANCE OVERHAUL; ANNOUNCES $500M GOLDMAN FACILITY; SEC OPENS PROBE INTO ALBRIGHT CAPITAL SHORT POSITIONS.*

Vanessa’s hands began to shake. "This... this is an outrage. My father will have your license for this, Vance."

"Your father is currently on a private flight returning from London," Marcus said, standing up and picking up his briefcase. "And when he lands at JFK, two federal agents will be waiting to hand him a subpoena for Albright Capital’s Cayman transaction records."

Marcus looked at her, his eyes cold and unimpressed. "Adrian was foolish enough to think you were drawn to his brilliance. Claire Whitmore, however, never suffered from such delusions. Have a pleasant morning, Miss Albright."

Marcus walked out of the library, leaving Vanessa standing in the middle of the room, the phone slipping from her fingers onto the soft Persian rug.

Meanwhile, forty blocks north at Mount Sinai West, the intensive care suite was quiet.

Claire was sitting propped up in bed, a fresh IV line in her arm, but the gray pallor of the previous night was gradually fading from her skin. Through the window, a rare shaft of March sunlight cut through the gray clouds, illuminating the pale walls.

The door opened softly, and a nurse wheeled in a mobile clear-plastic incubator.

Inside, swaddled in sterile cotton, lay a tiny baby girl with dark, fine hair, her chest rising and falling in steady, delicate breaths beneath a monitoring patch.

Dr. Brennan walked in behind the nurse, a tired but genuine smile on his face. "Her oxygen saturation has stabilized, Claire. She doesn't need the ventilator anymore. Just the nasal cannula and the warmer for the next couple of weeks."

Claire’s eyes filled with tears—the first tears she had allowed herself to shed since Adrian had walked out the night before.

She reached out through the circular port of the incubator, her trembling fingers gently brushing against her daughter’s tiny, warm hand.

The baby’s miniature fingers instinctively curled around Claire’s index finger, holding on with surprising strength.

"Hello, Grace," Claire whispered, her voice breaking with an overwhelming, fierce tenderness. "I’m here. We’re safe now."
