Chapter 5 - The Hostage in Yellow

"Mommy!" Sophie cried out softly, taking a half-step forward before one of the mercenaries grabbed her small shoulder, pulling her back.

Elena let out a muffled sob, her eyes locked on mine over the barrel of the gun pressed to her head. "Mr. Moretti... I'm sorry... I tried to keep her in the room..."

"Let them go," I said, my voice dropping into a lethal, terrifying growl as I turned away from Vance and faced the new arrivals. My hand hovered over the 9mm tucked into my belt. "If a single drop of blood touches that child or her mother, I will strip this entire estate down to its foundation and bury every last one of you in the rubble."

The man holding Elena stepped forward into the amber emergency light. He was broad-shouldered, with a jagged scar running from his jawline down into his collar, wearing the insignia of a syndicate branch that had been officially disbanded a decade ago—the Iron Syndicate.

"Relax, Moretti," the scarred man sneered, his voice gravelly and harsh. "We didn't come here for a bloodbath. We came for the girl."

Vance turned around calmly, stepping back beside the scarred enforcer as if they had planned the entire entrance down to the second.

"You see, Adrien," Vance said, adjusting his silver silk scarf with agonizing leisure. "Sophie isn't just an ordinary child. Her biological father wasn't some local laborer. She is the granddaughter of the man who designed the original cipher code for the entire Chicago underground network—a code your father stole to build your little empire."

My mind raced. The pieces began clicking together with horrifying speed. The missing encryption keys, the security bypasses, the way Sophie could hear and manipulate structural frequencies without touching a single wire.

"She's a living receiver," I realized aloud, my dark eyes narrowing with fury.

"Precisely," Vance smiled. "And now that she has accidentally broadcasted the master location code of your estate's primary data vault, the entire underworld knows exactly where to find the keys to your kingdom."

The scarred enforcer raised his pistol higher against Elena’s temple, tightening his grip. "Hand over the master vault override keys, Moretti. Or the housekeeper and her little radio get a front-row seat to your downfall."

Marco raised his rifle from the landing, aiming straight down at the enforcer's chest, waiting for my single word to turn the foyer into a slaughterhouse.

I looked at Elena, then down at Sophie, who was quietly holding up her button-eyed doll, staring right at me with an expression that held no fear at all—only an eerie, knowing calm.

The air in the foyer grew dead silent as I slowly reached into my jacket pocket.
