Chapter 7 - Resonance

The harmonic tone swelled into a roaring wave of frequency that swept across the marble hall, tearing the air apart with invisible force.
Vance stumbled backward, clutching his head as his immaculate silver silk scarf slipped from his shoulders. The high-pitched whine was tearing through the electronic components of the estate's security relays; the amber emergency lights overhead flickered, sparked, and died entirely, plunging the grand foyer into absolute, pitch-black dark.
"Get them!" I roared into the void, pivoting instantly in the dark.
I didn't need light to move through my own home. I lunged forward through the screaming frequency, tackling the scar-faced enforcer before he could recover his weapon. My fist struck bone with a sickening crunch, sending him crashing hard against the mahogany study door.
From the landing above, Marco dropped into action. His heavy tactical boots hit the grand staircase with a thunderous thud as he descended into the fray, his night-vision goggles snapping down to cut through the ink-black gloom.
"Securing the hostages!" Marco's voice boomed over his tactical comms. "Elena, stay low!"
A muffled gunshot echoed from the center of the foyer, the muzzle flash illuminating Vance’s panicked face as he fired wildly into the dark, scrambling toward the open front doors.

"You won't escape this, Moretti!" Vance's voice shrieked from the threshold, cut off sharply as the heavy oak doors slammed shut under the automated emergency locks.
The high-pitched ringing tone stopped as abruptly as it had begun. Silence rushed back into the foyer, heavy and suffocating, broken only by the ragged breathing of the men groaning on the floor and the soft, terrified whimpers of little Sophie in the dark.
