Chapter 6 - The Weight of a Key

The cold metal of the master vault key scraped against my fingertips as I slowly drew it from my inner pocket, the amber light glinting off its heavy, serrated brass edge.
Marco held his position on the upper landing, his breath hitching, his rifle barrel locked onto the scar-faced enforcer's chest. One word from me, and the foyer would explode into a hail of high-caliber death. But with Elena trembling against a gun barrel and Sophie standing untouched a few feet away, a single stray bullet could wipe out everything I cared about.
"Smart choice, Moretti," Vance purred, his cold eyes gleaming with malicious triumph as he stepped forward, holding out an open palm to receive the key. "Power isn't won by holding the trigger; it's won by knowing when to drop the shield."
"Don't touch it, boss!" Marco shouted down from the balcony, his voice cracking with urgency. "If they get into that vault, the entire syndicate infrastructure goes down with it!"
I didn't break eye contact with Vance. I walked slowly across the marble floor, my boots clicking with rhythmic finality, until I was close enough to smell the faint scent of sandalwood and expensive scotch radiating from Vance's coat.
"You think a key is all it takes to unlock my empire?" I asked, my voice a low, lethal hum that vibrated through the silent room.
"It's enough to start the fire," Vance replied smoothly, curling his fingers closer to my hand.

Before Vance's fingers could close around the brass, Sophie let out a sharp, piercing gasp. The little girl dropped her battered cloth doll. As the button-eyed toy hit the marble floor, a high-pitched, harmonic ringing tone—like a struck crystal wine glass—rippled through the foyer, growing so loud and intense that the glass panels of the front doors began to vibrate violently.
The scar-faced enforcer dropped his pistol, both hands flying to his ears with a choked cry of agony as blood began to trickle from his left nostril.
