Chapter 1 - The Weight of an Accidental Confession

The freezing autumn air outside our home suddenly felt suffocating, heavy with the metallic tang of emergency lights reflecting off the wet pavement. I stood on the welcome mat, my chest rising and falling in shallow, jagged breaths as my sister’s words hung suspended between us like a physical blow.

“I didn’t know Chloe would come home.”

The admission dropped like lead. My gaze locked onto her face, watching the color drain completely from her cheeks as she realized what she had just blurted out to a grieving mother and two active-duty police officers.

“What do you mean, you didn’t know she would come home?” I stepped forward, my voice rising, stripped of all sisterly warmth. “You were talking about my husband. You said you only meant for him to sleep. What did you give him? What was in this house?”

Before my sister could scramble for another lie, Officer Vance—the senior patrolman who had been inspecting the garage—stepped through the front door. He walked with a heavy, deliberate tread, holding a clear plastic evidence bag containing the folded piece of paper he had recovered from behind the storage shelf.

“Ma’am,” the officer said, his eyes shifting from my sister to me. “You’re going to want to see this.”
